My thoughts are with the people of Christchurch.

I went to university there in 1975...what a wonderful city and people. And I live in a place where the same thing can, and will, happen.

Have just had a patchy AIM communication with arts students that I stayed with in Papanui last year (sessional teaching at University of Canterbury); they are all very shaken and getting out of town. Saw the horror of the church in ruins. It's very sad and very, very alarming.

Is that you Sean — Sean Scanlon — quoted in reports on the quake in the news?

I just read this news. The pictures are tragic. I am really glad you (Sean) seem to be away from that part of NZ. But still it must impact your life.

We're in the North Island (Auckland region), so not much seismic activity here.

The death toll is already 65 and rising. Very horrible. I've been to Christchurch several times and it's a fantastic city, now in ruins. There is a live newsfeed here: http://www.novafm.com.au/video_live...earthquake-in-christchurch-new-zealand_110150

I just watched the feed. The loss of life and the destruction are heart-rending.
I can well relate. I was in Santa Cruz Calif. in 1989, when the quake hit there, and the images from today are all too familiar. They are hard to watch, a vivid reminder of what happened then. Though no one I knew was hurt, and we only had some things broken, it still was very stressful, with frequent large aftershocks, no power, gas, or water, etc.
To our N.Z. friends, condolences on the loss of life and the damage to a beautiful city, and hopes that recovery can start soon. Hopes and prayers that all our members there are OK.

This is horrendous, harrowing and heavy stuff to witness; a credit to the NZ media struggling with broken and overloaded infrastructure. My God, a beautiful city that looks like a bomb has fallen.

Was reading on the New Zealand Herald about the 400km Alpine Fault — responsible for the majestic towering mountains of the South Island, and the terminal consequences if that monstrous fault went troppo — which it is due to within the ongoing 50-year time frame (!).

My thoughts and condolences. A beautiful city and fine people. I lived in the North Island for 25 years, my Kiwi son and his family live in Wellington. We always thought that Wellington would be the big one.

I remember how the Air NZ Antarctic plane disaster affected everyone in NZ; it's one big family and only those who live in a small country will completely understand.

We're now getting more info too from some of the surrounding suburbs, including the port area. Some incredible pictures, like where a truck sized bolder has come down the hill above, straight through one house and down the hill. Much of Lyttelton's hostoric building have been devastated. The liquefaction and actual earth movement looks worse this time.

I was down there last week, the building I was in is apparently a write-off. The tallest building there is on the verge of collapse, having taken on a bit of a twisted lean.

Like Ross said, everyone thought it'd be Wellington. It's probably only a matter of time....

Best wishes to our Christchurch folk.
