Best soup for tech pan if not technidol

    Hi,

    I just got a bunch of 35mm tp, and wanted to know what the best developer for pictorial apps if not technidol. I remember reading aboout using rodinal 1:100, but wanted to make sure from someone who actually uses the stuff. Thanks. Also, what's a fair price for a long 150ft roll of the stuff? Is it wortth the hassle?

    Rodinal + Tech Pan is an effective combination. I have used it with the sheet film at 1+200 for copy stand work. You would have to work out an EI and time by practical trial however. I doubt it would be the same as for tungsten illumination and long exposures.

    There ar several devs you can use for TP, some are located in Anchell's "Darkroom Cookbook". Somewhere I have some data on using TP and Diafine; I'll have to try and find that for you. I found TP to be very fickle and Diafine might be a good combo; although your EI will be higher than 25-32, which is often recommended.

    Is it worth the hassle? IMO, no. I shot several hundred feet of this stuff and found it very hard to tame. The grain is super-fine and you can get great 11x14's out of 35mm, IF you get a good neg in the first place. I would more often than not get contrast that was too high, or very thin negs. Perhaps I just never figured the stuff out, but I went back to APX 25. When I run out of that it will be Efke 25 or Ilford's Pan-F. The tonal range on those films is much better and they are much easier to dev.

    I saw a bulk roll on ebay yesterday that was selling for $150.00; to rich for me.

    I found my notes. Please note that I have NOT tried these. I'm just a darkroom rat who saves notes from this and other sites re: dev times. Here we go:

    TP in Diafine, EI 80, 3 min in A bath, 45 sec in B. 68F
    OR EI 100, 3 min in A, 1 min in B. 68F

    In Rodinal, EI 25, 1+100, 7 min. 68F
    OR EI 6, 1+200, 16 min. 68F


    In Microphen EI 32, 1+5, 14 min. 75F

    In Ethol Tec, EI 100, 1+30, 5-7 min 68F

    I posted this in the other thread which got thrashed I guess. C41 (flexicolor) developer works extremely well with Tech Pan. Us a conventional stop and fix. 11 minutes, conventional agitation and asa 50 for first test.

    Secondarily, use prebath of .2% of potassium ferricyanide for two minutes and develop in any developer for B&W film that give the equivalant of HC110B at 11 minutes for a first test. Us a film speed of asa 32. This may not be enough development.

    A properly exposed and developed TP negative will look thin due to the very low base+fog that comes from using TP.

    Although the gain is extremely fine the extended red sensitivity will produce an unusual gray scale that may or may not suit a particular subject nicely. To elimiminate the unusual panchromatic response and to achieve a normal rendering use a CC40 Cyan filter without changing your exposure.

    To achieve higher resolution than can be achieved with 100Tmax or Pan F+, for instance, is going to be extremely challenging.

    I have shot test shots made with a very sturdy tripod, mirror lock up etc on a Contax RTSIII camera with prime Zeiss lenses at optimum aperture of the same scene with only the shutter speed being changed with the TP and cc40cyan filter vs 100Tmax. Under the focussing magnifier of 25x and a 6.5 magnification the finer granularity of the TP was evident. The prints were near identical as far as tonality and no difference could be seen in sharpness when examining the prints with a loupe. A glass carrier and a vacuum easel were used in making the tests.

    For me, I believe that buying Arista 50+ for $16.99 a 100ft roll makes much more sense.
