Bienfang mounting

    To those who use Bienfang paper for pt/pd : how do you mount it ? Hinges, hot press, starch mounting... ?

    I've just made some trials with the paper and like very much the first results. Dry mounted on Alpharag with my usual Colormount tissue, it has a nice finish and because of the slight yellowish color of the tissue, it's very warm and looks like a hot pd print on classical paper. Without mounting or simply put on a pure white card, it's very interesting, it looks colder and of course very sharp as often with colder tones. I guess it should be about the same thing with a whiter or translucent hot mounting tissue, but I have no one under my hands right now.

    If mounted with hinges, because of the thinness of the paper, I'm afraid with curling. So, how do you mount it ?

    Some peope don't dry mount it at all. I have seen several of Louis Connor's prints on Bienfang and she just hinges it on backing board. Regardless of whether you dry mount or not the paper is so thin that it will pick up the color of the backing board.

    In the US there are various other vellums, some thicker than Bienfang, that work well with Pt./Pd. printing.

    BTW, if you're looking for a pure white tissue to dry-mount vellum prints, Light Impressions Heat Tac is the best I've found.

    Here are a few vellums I've used for pt/pd:

    -Staedtler-Mars 100% Rag Drafting Vellum
    -Clearprint Vellum (comes in various weights. I like the 1020 version, which is a little heavier and easier to work with)
    -Azon Vellum

    In general I find the 20 lb vellum much easier to use, especially with large prints, than the 16 lb material.

    You might try counter-mounting your prints.

    I always wondered how Lois Conner's prints were mounted. BTW, using this paper in 7X17 must be a nightmare when wet. One of my friends suggested a support to carry and move them in the clearing trays. Do the other vellums share the same visual properties with Bienfang ?

    A silly question, because of my poor english : what does "counter-mounting" mean ?

    Well, the ones I have seen by her were not dry mounted, just hinged to the backing board.

    The 20 lb Clearprint is *much* easier to work with when wet than Bienfang, or the lighter Clearprint material. And it appears to have the same visual properties as Bienfang. Nice plate finish, neutral color and very good detail.

    the times Ive made prints on thin japanese tissue like paper (Gampi paper) I used a sandwich of fiber glass screening so that I never actually touched the paper and it could still get chemicals to it. Also have used sheets of plexiglass as a backing when working with delicate papers. Seemed to work well.
    I would assume this would hold true for vellum as well.

    You mount your print to a second sheet of the same paper with mounting tissue in-between. Then the prints are mounted with corners to the board.
