    Hi

In Denmark we have a huge Book Sale every year where one can save up to 90% on books.
I have bought a bunch today, and among them I have a book called "Erotique" and it is a compilation of erotic photography from 1850 up to now.
I got it for 69 DKR (approx. $14, £6). Format is approx. 5x7 inches. 224 pages.

    GREAT BOOK!

Is this another book full of bodies that have been photoshopped? Body shapes sliced and softened into perfect shape? Digital or B&W? Or is this no longer an issue here?
Either way, the cover shows a perfectly beautiful form that even I as a female can appreciate.

Since the images, you say, date from as early as 1850, It's my guess that when the term 'photoshop' is applied, it refers to a store from which photography supplies can be purchased.

Just think though, all the nubile and voluptuous models from that early era would now be over 150 years old. Hmmmm.....

Some has been PS'ed, but a lot are older pre-digital photos (1850-now). The photos are both natural and futuristicly; color and BW. Keep in mind that the book is a compilation with photos by many photogs. Some are normal nudy shots and some are quite S/M'ish and fetishy.
The cover represents the quality pretty good.

That reminds me why Ansel Adams didn't do nudes... he tried a new erogenous zone system, and always got stuck in zone 1.

I got the book by your suggestion Morten and have to say I am a bit dissapointed.
Sure, the selection of photographs is good, considering they even use classics like Bill Bradt's nudes, but most of the would not quallify as erotic in my opinion.
Most of the photographs are nudes. Good nudes. Pretty nudes. Artistic nudes.
Then there are the glamorous-fashion-pseudo-erotic ones. These come off to me as someone -trying hard- to be erotic but in the end being just a glamour fashion shot. Like Helmut Newton's.
Even the whips-spanking-chain-leather variety even though they definately could be seen as an "erotic sort" did not in my opinion contain the energy of eroticism.
So, I would categorise the photos in the book as either the fine art nudes or the glamorous fashion "erotics".
For me eroticism is subtle yet deep. It is hinted, not thrown in your face. Especially in photography which because of advertisement has made common the "in your face" sexuallity.
Btw, the obvious and only subject of eroticism is the female body in the book. So for those who appreciate the sexuallity of men, though luck. And it is really about the body, meaning there is no images that hint to eroticism without including a naked or sexually clad female.

I don't know. I am the kind of guy who finds Playboy, Penthouse, Maxim chicks and photography really boring and unnattractive and falls asleep in front of a "hardcore" porno movie becaue it reminds me of nature-documentary about copulation not eroticism.

In my viewpoint, a good book about nudes and glamour but hardly worth the title.

Ok, the title may be optimistic

But for the cost ($14) I find it great. I have some more expensive books by Chas Ray Krider, Eric Kroll et.al. which are much better. I use the book to find some photogs which I have never heard of before and if I like their photos I will consider buying more from them. And you can bring this around in your bag and read it on the bus which is more difficult and heavy with the large coffee-table-sized books.

I have been looking for it but couldn't find it. Where did you get it Morten ?
Which books could you especially recommend on the subject ?
Isn't "Erotic" determind by culture and time ?

Erotic is certainly determined by culture and time. On this i agree fully.

I bought the book at Gad (www.gad.dk). If you would like me to I can find it for you. PM or mail on this.

    Other recommended books are:

I got it from Amazon.co.uk for about ten euros (even cheaper than Morten got it!).
I am sure the good doctor liked it because of the inclusion of a bit of BDSM.
Being small is an advantage. I prefer small photography books than large ones.
Like Morten said they are much easier to carry around.
I went through Erotique today while taking a hot bath.
I loooooooove reading in the bathtub where I spend atleast an hour. Small photo books and Edgar Allan Poe has been my favorites.
I tried bringing Tim Rudman or the Way Beyond Monochrome but I could hardly hold it above the water for more than a few seconds...

You know, Mr arigram, there's something about Europeans (and just about everywhere else on earth except the U.S.) that is so RELAXED about sex, eroticism, and life in general. Your confession to the thousands of people logged on to APUG of your love of a hot bath while looking through a book of nudes is just delightful! And I wholeheartedly agree with you about porn films and most of what passes for erotic photography - might as well be anatomy lessons. I prefer subtlety, and anticipation. Oops! Now I'm confessing in public too!

I can't say that Greeks are relaxed about sex and especially in public, quite the opposite.
But anyway, if I had confessed that I find the book "really hot stuff" and the pictures "stimulating" then my confession of reading in the bathtub could be have taking that exact embarassing meaning!
Anyway, plain simple nude female bodies don't do it for me. I can very much appreciate the beauty of them but can't be sexually stimulated just because they are nekkid.
Must be the years of drawing and sculpting nude models...

I have been in strip clubs twice in my life.
Once in Greece for a new years party with some guys. We ended up fighting and half of us leaving to go to the beach and watch the sun rise for the first day of the new year. I guess it was the romantic of us.
Greek strip clubs are seedy, dirty, full of weird characters and the women are poor ladies from the former soviet republics that have been trafficed by the mafia. I feel really bad about them, especially considering that once they where lawyers, teachers, scientists... I may do a story about them in the future, but that could be dangerous.
In the US I once visited a strip club with a crazy greek I had just met. The place was totally different from the greek ones: it was very refined and clean. You could not touch the ladies and they were professionals trained in dancing and gymnastics. The problem was that I could not find the erotic at all. I was hitting my head on the wall because I did not have my drawing pad with me; they were like the models at my art school! Pretty soon I got really tired of seeing booties flashing in front of my face and begged my friend to leave.

Eroticism is the stuff of fantasies, not of physicallity.
I guess I am just a tight ass intellectual...
