    Hi All,
A hybrid subforum has been added to the alt process forum. I call it our "gray" area. I found it impossible to disregard any process which involves traditional methods wether it's developing film with coffee or using computers. If traditional plays an important part of the overall process, then it should have a place in APUG. This area is separate in a sense that members and subscribers can not see posts from this forum in their "view new posts" list, and can not see posts in this forum when they use the APUG search engine. There is an option for members to request this access if they want it, and details can be found in the new subforum. I feel this is a good compromise in that if you are not interested in this subforum you will see nothing from it. Also, anything involving digital processes can be moved to this area keeping the analog forums 100% analog.

Les McLean has agreed to keep an eye on it as moderator which is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Sean

    Sean,

Thank you for establishing the hybrid forum. And I believe Les McLean is an excellent person to serve as moderator of the sub forum in that he appears obviously more interested in the creative possibilities of image making than ideology.

A couple of thoughts. First, you might also think about creating a similar sub forum under contact printing, or at least establish some kind of link from contact printing to the hybrid sub forum. Since discussions of making digital negatives is almost sure to be one of the topics that will be discussed on the hybrid sub forum it seem to me that a very good case can be made for this kind of discussions under contact printing. In my opinion the possibility of combining the image manipulation and correction potential of the computer with a final wet processed print is a very attractive option that could well serve to stimulate interest in printing with contact printing processes such as AZO.

Second, in creating this sub forum it should be understand that while the focus is on a final traditional print there will inevitably be some parts of the discussion that deal with computer and printer hardware and software issues. I definitely would not like the sub forum to become a haven for people who just want to talk about digital issues but I doubt very much that this will happen because on the whole alternative printers are among the most skilled people you will find anywhere in the use of traditional processes.

I am sure that the creation of the hybrid sub forum is going to create a lot of questions about what is or is not appropriate but I have full confidence in Les' ability to deal with such issues in a reasonable and fair manner.

    Hi Sean
I just signed on to the sub forum and I think this will be an excellent way to avoid the past problems. The new hybrid techniques are amazing and shortley I will be able to announce a new method of imaging with help of others on this forum and experts here in my city. 3-6 month time line. As one already exposing ciba and fibre prints digitally and processing traditionally I can say with confidence this announcement will create lots of discussion in the large format community.

    Hi Sandy,

We'll see how things go. I'd rather moderate items to 1 area than have multiple subforums or links everywhere announcing where to post hybrid items. Discussion of hardware and software is allowed if it in in the spirit of using hybrid processes. In other words it should be obvious that your discussing a printer as part of your hybrid workflow and not just to print images from your DSLR.

I welcome this new venture; being a true alternative and traditionalist photographer. However, I consider Les will have his work cut out if he is to avoid the weaving of a tangled APUG web.

I posted the alternative developers thread un the gray area... but it seems it doesn't belong there.

Could the administrators please move it to the riht forum?
If you need to delete it please let me know to make a copy first.
