I have liked reading the responses to my first 2 "Just Thinking" threads and thought I'd start a 3rd one.

If you had the opportunity to follow 1 person taking pictures and documenting their life, who would it be and why. To make it more interesting, as a second question, if you could only do 1 year of their life, which year. Again, any historical personage is OK, available of C-41 film and 1 hour labs is not a requirement.

I came up with a couple.

    1. Adolf Hitler. His life is varied, from a soldier in WWI on through the rise and fall of NAZI germany. The evolution of his life would make an interesting photographic study. If I could only do one year, I would choose one from the his rise to power in the late 1930's. Perhaps the year of Kristalnacht? It would all be in Black and White, of course.

    2. Napoleon. Similar to Hitler so far as reasons. Rose from obscurity and was the focus of Europe...twice. If only 1 year, definitely the invasion of, and retreat from, Russia. I would shoot this in a combination of color and B&W. I think that the colorful uniforms of the era would add to some of the pictures but the stark bleakness that you can only achieve with B&W would be needed for some of the pictures as well.

    3. The Dalai Lama (well, one of his Incarnations). Again, some color and some B&W. The deeply religious monks combined with the backdrop of Tibet. If only for a year, I would choose one of the years where the Buddhists were being persecuted in Tibet.

    Aggie,
You amaze me. Really, you know who Ramblin' Jack Elliot is? I think we should take a poll and see if anyone else knows who Ramblin' Jack is. All those that know stand up and be counted. How do you do a poll on this site?

    1. Sidharta Gautama - The years spent in seeking the source of human suffering
and specifically the last year of his journey before enlightenment.
    2. Mother Theresa in the last year of active service to the suffering.
    3. Ghandi his life and more specifically his period of non violent opposition to British oppression of his fellow countrymen.
    4. This one is of two individuals that can not be separated in the context of their achievment. That would be Orville and Wilbur Wright in the year preceding their historic flight and especially a photograph of the historic moment of their first flight.

Christopher Columbus....right when he first set foot in the "new" continent

    Copernicus.

    Leonardo DaVinci.

Last two are interesting enough I would take any year, but the time he made the Mona Lisa would be cool....

Christ. I'd like to get that bread to fish thing and that walking on water thing on film.

And, since I like LF portraits, would it count for me to do a million year series...
Homo Erectus, full figure portrait standing with a bone clenched in a fist.
Homo Sapiens, same study but with a sharpened stone
Man with first fire, first metal, first crops, etc. Early woman. A small child, maybe 10-thousand years ago but probably indistinguishable from a child today.

It would be fascinating to look at the spark in their eyes. Big and crystal clear, captured by an 8x10 camera so no detail is left out.

My mother and my father, the year they met.

One of the people who built the pyramids in Egypt. I'd like to see the top stones being put in place.

One of the people who built Stonehenge. Ditto with the stones.

Dvorak, when he visited Minnehaha Falls in Minnesota. I wonder whether or not that waterfall (which I grew up near) was inspiration for his 9th symphony, which is my favorite piece.

    There are so many more.

    Aggie,
I don't think Jack is 90, I will bet he is pushing 75. Maybe he is just looking like he is 90. One of my best fiends played in his band when my friend lived in Berkley in the early '70's. I will call him today and see what he thinks. Michael, my friend, is a guitar builder and cowboy singer. He hired Jack last year for the cowboy poetry and music festival in Alpine, Texas. What is the RS? Stay tuned.

Jack is between 70 and 75 according to the wife of my friend Michael. She called about some prints I was doing for her. Said Michael was branding calves today and would not be near a phone until late. One thing, when you meet Ramblin' Jack, you soon realize that he is called Ramblin' Jack not because he travels around alot, which he does, but because of the way he talks.

Ramblin' Jack learned guitar from Woody Guthrie, Arlo's Dad (This Land Is Your Land and etc). Taught Bob Dylan songs and helped teach him guitar. And mostly helped keep the folk tradition alive thru his music and performances. He is a legend in his own mind.

    1. Benjamin Franklin. Not sure which year; probably near the Revolution, though.

    2. Noah and the great flood.
