Took my pawn shop prize F4s out to shoot a graduation last night.
After the sun went down (football stadium graduation) I could not see the LCD readout at the bottom of the view finder.
Does the F4 not have a backlight for the LCD or do I just not know how to turn it on?

You do not know how to turn it on.

    Mine has two too.
I was getting enough light through the translucent window on the prisim housing to see the upper display. Just the lower one needed help.

Yes, like bdial explained, that switch above the f4 marking... gives a green backlight.
Sorry, I mixed the f4 and f5 displays...

One of the F4's displays is built into the eye-level finder, the other is built into the camera body. Both show up in the eye level finder, but the body one is the only one you see with the waist level and high-mag finders.
