What do you mean by "the" led light?
We use led's everyday in the motion picture industry and they work just fine, low power consumption and very high output. Try light panels, kino flo, rosco, ledz, mole richardson, or arri.

The little grouped up LED's on one panel I've seen on a video cam.

Works fine. Can't be fussy when your 100yo camera doesn't have x-sync and you need some continuous lights. I bought some cheap chinese panels on Ebay; lots of light, hard to mount.

White LED's have incorporated fluorescant substances (just like fluorescant lamps). They are less spiky than low colour quality fluorescant lamps, but still have peaks.

I sometimes use a L.E.D. video light with variable power either on camera or on a light stand instead of flash for outdoor portraits to lift the shadows and balance the light because you can easily see the effect on the subject and how much fill in you are getting.

I'll have to show you how my 100 year old camera does have x sync.
