    LONDON GATHERING
Friday 16th August to Sunday 18th August 2013

On the last few gatherings that we have had, the idea of a get-together in London has been brought up, but nothing ever materialised, probably because the consensus was that it would be far too expensive to put something together in the city, with the inflated cost of hotels etc. After a suggestion from Neil Souch to check out Travel Lodges, I found that providing a room is booked well in advance, they can be very affordable.
So, after a few online conversations with Neil, and a few telephone conversations with Jon Butler, this would be a proposed plan for a London gathering. The venue would be the Travel Lodge at Tower Bridge. The price per person per night will be £38, providing booked in advance. More info can be found here:

    http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/391/London-Central-Tower-Bridge-hotel

I can’t believe that the hotel is going to provide 4 star accommodation, but the hotel is in a great location, with many of the local attractions within walking distance, or a very short tube ride away, such as St Katherine’s Dock, Borough Market, Tower Bridge, the South Bank, Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge and St Pauls, and not forgetting Canary Wharf. Also, and importantly, there is a wonderful exhibition on up town, the Natural History Museum hosts Sebastiao Salgado’s first showing of his new body of work called “Genesis”. This will be a huge exhibition of some 250 images that have been eight years in the making, and London gets the first showing before it travels worldwide. The Exhibition is showing from April 11th to September 8th. More info here:

    http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/temporary-exhibitions/salgado-genesis/index.html

Those of you that are fortunate to spend time in the city will know that life is fast, and there is always little time to take in the surroundings, so this gathering will be the perfect opportunity to do just that. There is something truly magical about the city, and my hair on the back of my neck still stands on end when I cross the Thames, and look down river from one of the many bridges. We will also be very fortunate to be joined by Jon Butler who has a great knowledge of the area, and has offered to join me in planning a weekend to remember, with wonderful photo walks along the South Bank, great venues, with wonderful photo opportunities. A suggested itinerary could be as follows:

Friday ~ Meet up in the Hotel for the usual social gathering, general chit chat and photo talk.

Saturday ~ After breakfast we can be perhaps head towards St Katherine’s Dock, which is a beautiful part of London, spending a bit of time making photographs, then head over Tower Bridge to the South bank, and on to the Tate Modern, which is a wonderful building in itself, and makes for some great images. After a coffee or two, some more time can be spent making photographs along the South Bank, and then perhaps head over the Millennium Bridge towards St Pauls. Perhaps then make the short journey by tube to take in the Salgado exhibition, or one of the many exhibitions that may be showing locally at the time, perhaps in the OXO Tower. In the evening, a print share has been penciled in for around 7pm back at the hotel, along with the usual general chit chat, and of course we will all need to eat at some point!

Sunday ~ This can be pretty much the same, perhaps heading to Canary Wharf, again a wonderfully photographic part of London, or it may be decided that this would be the best day for visiting the Salgado exhibition, whatever is decided, I am sure it will make for a great weekend.

So, what do you think, fancy joining us?

If so, here are a few things to remember…………

Booking the hotel early is recommended. At present, the rates for the weekend of 16th/18th August are £38 a night. This would be non-returnable. If you wish to cover yourself in case of a cancellation, then your room will cost £70 a night (booking now), but is returnable up to noon on your day of arrival. You make your choice.
The earlier you book, the less you pay. If you booked just prior to the gathering, a room would be about £87 per night, but if you book approximately.....

1 month before and it would be £70pn
6 weeks before and it would be £50pn
8 weeks before and it would be £46pn
10 weeks before and you would then pay the £38pn, so providing you book early June you will be getting the cheapest rates.

It would not be advisable to travel in by car as there is no parking at the hotel, but there is a site nearby: The cost is £2 an Hour Monday to Saturday, and £2 on Sunday, so could work out rather expensive.

The cost of the hotel room does not include breakfast, which will be £7.65 for an all you can eat breakfast, but this can be paid for at the time of booking for a saving of £1.

It would be better for those that wish to take in the Salgado Exhibition to decide whether it will be visited on the Saturday, or the Sunday, as it is a ticketed exhibition, so will need to be booked in advance.

It would be advisable to leave your tripod at home. It’s not illegal to take photographs in London, but it is illegal to block a public highway. You will be moved on. That said, I am sure that you would get away with it a little later in the day on the Riverside.

So what do you think? Come along and join us, even for just a day. Or if you wish, pop along to the hotel at 7pm on the Saturday for the print share, perhaps bringing some of your own along, or just to sit and relax and enjoy others, and join in with the chat. There is no prejudice as to what camera is hanging around your neck, or even if you only use an Iphone. This is a great opportunity to meet new faces, share in a wonderful location, and see some fabulous prints if you are still about for the print share.

We would love to have you along.

Can't see me getting along to this, but I've got to say how impressed I am with the way you've researched all this and set it all out for those who might be able to make it!

    Hi Peter

Thank you for your kind comment. I find that it makes the gatherings all the more attractive when most of the leg work is done for them.

    cheers

    Just seeing this thread!

Well thought out program! A nice circuit for those who are new to London. I should be able to participate to some of the program.

If some international APUGers are considering travelling for this event, I am available to help in any way I can (accommodation and airport pick up) if that can make your travel to London more realistic and affordable.

This is a superb idea. I'll look into the dates and see if I'm free. Living up in 't North I often feel I'm missing out on all the London exhibitions and events, so this should give me the kick up the arse I need to get down to London. And I'll have the chance to nip into Silverprint to stock up on chemicals, save myself the postage...

Bear in mind that Silverprint no longer trades on a Saturday. Their opening times are M-F, 9:30-5:30pm.

    Hi Delphine

Your support is much appreciated, thank you.

It would be lovely to have you along, and contribute in any way that you can. It would also be lovely for you to bring a few prints along to the print share, or some of your hand crafted books. We have penciled the print share in for about 7pm-ish on the Saturday, though as you know on these events, nothing ever goes exactly to plan.

    Thank you

    Stoo

    Hi Grumpyshutter

Please do get yourself on that train:wink:. It sure would be great to have you along, and if you are ever going to visit an exhibition in the city, Sebastiao Salgado's is one not to miss. If you have any questions about the weekend, or have any other ideas that you wish to add to the event, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Cheers, and hope to see you in August

    EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA

For those staying three nights, I thought it might be a great idea to book the SHARD VIEWING PLATFORM on the Sunday night. The perfect way to end the weekend

    http://www.theviewfromtheshard.com/

On the Sunday night the sun sets at 20.15hrs, so if we booked tickets for say, 19.00hrs, we can watch the sun go down over London, and then have a few drinks in the Bar afterwards. What do you think? Yes, it's expensive (£25), but it's not something you will do every day.

    Updated Attendance list

It is my pleasure to add Martin Aislabie to the list of attendee's. Martin has booked in to the hotel for three nights. Also, Mike Heller and his sister, who lives locally, hope to join us, and will travel in from Balham on a daily basis. It is also a great pleasure to welcome Delphine Lopez along. Delphine lives locally and also has a great knowledge of the area, which can only add to making this weekend all the more pleasurable. There is also some interest from Grumpyshutter, who would be travelling down to join us from Northumberland, and dazey, who lives locally. lets hope that I will be adding them to the list of definites very soon

    Hi Ian

That would be great if you could join us. I am hoping the weekend is going to be a pretty relaxed affair, so please do join us at any time over the weekend, whether that be for the print share on the Saturday night, The Salgado exhibition, or just for a coffee on the South bank. You would be most welcome.

    Cheers

    Hi

I am new to this forum but live locally in east London. I would love to drop in for some of the weekend. The itinerary looks great. For some interested in the 'edgier' side of London, I could suggest Brick Lane, The markets around Columbia road or London fields, or Hackney Wick which is round the corner from the Olympic site.

    Hi

Sorry for my late reply to you. Yes, please do pop in and introduce yourself. It would be great to meet you and I am sure you will feel most welcome. Some great suggestions there, thank you. There is just so much to do in so little time, but I am sure this will not be the last get together in the City. The itinerary is never carved in stone, and we just go with the flow on the day, so suggestions are always welcome.

I will look forward to meeting you in August

    All the best

    Hello everyone

So, here we are just a little over four weeks away from this London Gathering, so I thought it was time to give this thread the proverbial kick up the rear, and write a few words just to let anyone who wishes to join us on any of the two days what we have got planned.

Those of us staying in the Hotel will be arriving late afternoon, early evening on the Friday 16th August to get settled in, and perhaps get together for some food, share a drink, and general chit-chat. For those that fancy joining us for a drink that night, you will find us here....

    http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/391/London-Central-Tower-Bridge-hotel

A very simple itinerary has been put together for the Saturday based around the visit to Sebastio Salgado's 'Genesis' exhibition. For those of you not staying at the Hotel and planning to travel in for the day, you are welcome to meet up with us there, or catch us on route. After breakfast at approximately 09.30 to 10.00am, we will be heading over Tower Bridge taking in the scenery, and heading in the direction of Borough Market. After spending time making images, or if you so wish, just taking in the sights and enjoying each others company, we will find a place to lunch, and perhaps grab a beer or a coffee, before heading over to the Exhibition. The Museum closes at 17.50, so we will be thrown out by 18.00, at which we will then be heading back to the hotel for food and the print share, remembering of course that nothing is ever carved in stone when it come to our arrangements, apart from the Exhibition time that is.

The time that has been decided to visit the exhibition is 3.00pm on Saturday 17th August.Tickets can be booked here...

    http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/temporary-exhibitions/salgado-genesis/

Just click on the "Book tickets Online" about centre page. It is all pretty straight forward, but you will find that you have to go through the laborious task of registering with the Natural History Museum online first. Tickets are £10.00 for adults, seniors 60+ are £5.00.

Sunday's itinerary can be decided on the day, or perhaps on the Saturday. As I have mentioned before, nothing is ever carved in stone on these gatherings, the whole idea is to meet up with like minded people, enjoy the sights, relax, chat, and just enjoy, with no real pressure.

    So perhaps for the Sunday:

Canary Wharf, a mecca for hand held photography
St Katherines dock, such a beautiful part of London
The South Bank, taking in the Tate Modern, with it's famous Turbine Hall, a wonderful area in itself
The Millennium Bridge, and perhaps crossing over to St Paul's

Like I have said, this can be decided on the day, but we will be heading out of the hotel by 09.30 to 10.00am.

Saturday night will be print share night, which will be held at the hotel, so if you are choosing to just pop in for a few hours, then this will be a great few hours spent. They are a nice, relaxed affair, sit and have a drink, chat, perhaps bring some of your work along to show, or just enjoy others. (prints are always shown away from food and drink!)

    Hi Everyone

So here we are just under a week away from our first gathering in London, and thank you all so much for the great response. A few Mondays back I took a trip up town and met up with Jon Butler to do a reccy of the area, and to see if the itinerary we had loosely put together was doable, and to get an idea of what food etc was available to us all near to the hotel. The hotel is beautifully situated just a short stroll away from the gateway to Tower Bridge, and close by is St Katherine's Dock, where there is an abundance of places to eat, and tastes to suite everyone. Two that come to mind are the Mala, an Indian Restaurant, which looks very reasonably priced and has a very varied menu, which also includes a good variety of Vegetarian dishes. The menu can be found on their site here:

    http://malarestaurant.com/

Close by is The Dickens Inn, which has a varied menu to suite everyone. Their Grill menu looks superb though a little bit pricey, but overall not too bad. Their menus etc can be found here:

    http://www.dickensinn.co.uk/the-grill/the-grill-menu

Of course these are only suggestions and good cheap food can be found elsewhere. I had a beautiful piece of cod in beer batter with a side salad for £9 in a pub in Borough Market, so eating does not have to cost the earth. Other eateries can be found here:

    http://www.skdocks.co.uk/restaurants/

The loosely planned itinerary for the Saturday is as follows.

After Breakfast, at approx 09.30am, head over Tower Bridge to the Southbank and spend some time making images along the way. The idea will be to head towards Borough Market, which is a great area for photography, and spend some time in the area, perhaps having a bit of lunch, a beer, or a coffee. As I have mentioned before, there are a few great pubs doing great food at reasonable prices, or you may prefer to eat from one of the stalls on the market itself. A little further along the Thames is the Tate Modern, which stands opposite the Wobbly bridge that leads accross to St Paul's. Again, a wonderful place for photography.

A little before 2.30pm, it would be a good idea for those that are going to the Salgado exhibition, and have booked tickets for 3pm, to meet at London Bridge (which we pass on the way), as we will need to cross the Thames to Monument tube to catch the Circle line to South Kensington.

The exhibition closes at 17.50pm, and somewhere around that time would be a good idea to head back to the hotel to have a freshen up and prepare for the Print share, which hopefully will kick off about 7.00pm to 7.30pm, though as we all know, it happens when it happens, but it is good to set a rough time for those planning on popping in for the evening. Some time during the day we should decide at what point to eat in the evening?

So, the print share will be 7.00 to 7.30pm-ish, at the Travelodge, London Tower Bridge.

    Sunday Itinerary

Sundays itinerary can be discussed during the day by those attending, but both myself and Jon think that the key place to visit are:

    Canary Wharf
    St Katherine's Dock
    Limehouse Basin
    Greenwich

All are stops on the Docklands Light Railway, and just a short walk away. Personally, both Limehouse Basin and Canary Wharf are beautiful with the sun low in the sky, so perhaps the afternoon shoot can end at one of these locations.

One last thing, There will be about three or four short tube journeys during the weekend, so it may be a good idea to buy a visitors Oyster travel card, or perhaps inquire about including tube travel with in the price of your rail fare if you are traveling in by train. Info on the Oyster card can be found here:

    http://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/

A few other things to remember.

By all means bring a tripod, but don't be too upset if you are moved on. Maybe late at night by the Thames you may get away with it.

    Bring a Brolly!

For those travelling in for the day, you can find out where we are by calling my mobile: 07736 544472.

Cheers, and look forward to seeing you soon.

    Best

Lovely to hear that you will be joining us Delphine. Please do bring some of your latest work, or some of your hand made books. It will be lovely to hear all about what you have been up to of late.

    see you Saturday.
