After finally reconstructing and refitting the darkroom with all the equipment I set one night to try it out. I called my cousin who has some films for development and he came to test the new Jobo.
During the development I smelled something bad. Pretty bad.
    "You farted" I accused him.
"No, I did not" he denied the accusation.
"You are not supposed to fart inside a darkroom you know", I insisted.
"I did not fart!", he exclaimed.
    I smelled more carefully.
"Yes, it does smell too shitty to be just a fart".
It thought a bit. Then it came to me.
You see, there used to be a functioning toilet seat in the room which was removed during the reconstruction. But the pipe remained and I thought I could use it for water drainage. Unfortunately it seems to be pretty connected to the sewage system and it carries all the aromas of mother nature in it, especially when someone in the appartment building uses it.

I have called the plumber and meanwhile I have left the door open.
I am sure all your chemicals, not even sepia smells that bad!

How about that for a photographic related toilet humor?

That sewer gas is some really nasty stuff, you definitely don't want to be breathing that.

I'm surprised they didn't cap the line when they removed the toilet.

I wouldn't light a match in there either. That methane is pretty flammable :surprised:

The air extractor was probably drawing more gas from the drain into the room that it was pushing out.

If you're going to plumb the drain into a sink, a simple S trap in the pipe should solve your problem.

Its ok, I just have to wait for the plumber to close the pipe properly.

You can put a towel into a plastic bag to plug it temporarily.

Just be glad your poop doesn't smell like darkroom.

I agree with dean. If you were going to use it as a drain put a sink over it. If there was a toilet there, it should also have a water source.

Awwww, come on... just admit that you farted. Hiring a plumber is a VERY expensive way to cover up your embarrassment!

I have a pretty big sink which is connected a drain. Plus right next to the toilet hole there is a floor drain hole. So I just need to cover it. Didn't think this would end up to be a discussion thread! I just thought it would be a silly post to counter all the angst at the forums lately.

And Brian, well, yes, I admit I fart some times and that they are pretty dangerous, especially after making that taboule and falafel the other day. Must have been too spicy I think...

ari- as long as you're not also hitting the Ouzo too hard along with the tabouleh and falafel - that would definitely produce explosive material-

then again, if you got into alt processes, you might be able to bottle that emanation and use it as a substitute for ether in wet-plate.

I agree with Dean. All that you need is a trap, and you'd be all set. Sure makes it hard to say no to a new darkroom sink eh ?

I don't like ouzo FlyingCamera so I guess I am ok with that. And since that food is Libanese I guess arrak would have been more appropriate if almost simular to ouzo. I just don't like the annice. Yuck.

Actually, all that is needed is a trap... with water in it.

A dry trap is no good. There's a bathroom at my home that has a shower that rarely gets used (yes, we bathe... but not in that bathroom). The whole house started smelling like poop, as Ari would say. My wife blamed me, then the baby... but it was a dry trap that was letting sewer gas seep into the house.

I don't understand this whole thing about traps. Why can't I just cover the pipe?

Sure... your can just cover the pipe. The trap is just another alternative.

This wouldn't be a very good discussion forum unless the issue was discussed, re-discussed, and then mutated into a discussion that you never wanted to participate in... would it?

But like I already said I have a sink that is connected to a drain and a floor drain already. Oh, forget it.
I will never post anything silly, remotely funny or irrelevant again.
    You guys killed it.

Ari, bottle the gasses, and save them. You never know when you need an alternate power source.
