I'm going to mention this here on APUG first as it is where Photostock began with 11 of us that met online back in 2006. Ten of you responded bravely to my invitation to come camp out in my woods and share all things photographic. Since then, the gathering has grown substantially, but thankfully has kept that original spirit that makes it such a good time. I'd love to keep it going and build on the good vibe we've all created and that brings me to the next step in the event's evolution.

    The Goal
Those of you who know me and have been to Photostock also know of my goal to get some sort of permanent workshop facility that can be used for the gathering and more. In fact, I'd love to be able to spread that photostock ethos over a yearly schedule of special workshops where we could bring in some of the best at what they do to teach and keep the creative juices flowing. Over the years we've had some pretty great people and even more have said they would come, but it remains up to me to build it.

What I've decided to do is go ahead with planning of such a building on my property near Cross Village, Michigan where this all began. I've already chosen the site and a builder and received a quote for a finished shell. The infrastructure, water, electricity and septic is already in place and all I need to do is come up with the money... *gulp* $25,000 for the building completed with an additional sum of $4,000 for permits, site preparation, cement slab, etc. It's a steep sum I know, but I am considering means of funding that include out of pocket, grants, Kickstarter, Indiegogo and any other ideas people may have.

    The Building and Fixtures
As for the rest, I am already pretty well set with equipment and fixtures. The building will have a 36' x 40 footprint, a covered porch area and will be sectioned into several rooms. The plan is for a 4 enlarger bay darkroom fully equipped, an alternative process room with plate burner and etching press for photogravure and an open, dry working room for gallery space, workshops, gatherings, talks, etc. Upstairs will be rooms for visiting instructors and guests coming for workshops or to simply use the facilities for their personal projects. For those attending workshops and wishing to camp on the property, the building will also include facilities complete with indoor and outdoor shower rooms.

    How to Help
I know it is a lot to ask to think you'll want to go out of your way to help. I understand completely, but what I am hoping is that all of you who believe will join with me in getting this thing built. A virtual barn raising of sorts. There are a number of ways people can help - financial is great, but just your enthusiasm will go a long way. I'm asking for your help in simply spreading the word when I do get a campaign going. Facebook, Twitter and all the now necessary evils will be helpful. I plan a website with updates as well as progress photos once it gets going and your help in getting the information out will be appreciated. I'll provide the links if you'll help post them in various places. The more buzz, the better.

    Testimonials, Photos and Video/Film
I could also use some testimonials if that is OK. A lot of you have written such very nice things after the events and if you don't mind, I'll grab a few for use in the campaign. Imagery is another thing that would help and if any of you have that special shot you'd like to share, that would be great. It could be a killer shot you've made on your explorations at Photostock or something of others having a good time. Something done at one of the workshops we've run over the years would also be helpful. You get the idea. Many of you have provided images for me in the past and I will also look at using those as long as there are no objections.

Video is another thing that would help. I am currently producing a video grovel for the crowd funding I plan on seeking and anything you might have that can be included would be great. I can use photos as mentioned above, but actual moving pictures would be good as well. Forgive me for forgetting who, but I remember someone shooting Super 8 at one of them? it might be cool to use a clip of that.

    Thank You!
I'd like to thank you in advance for even reading through this and any input you might have. Long winded, I know. I have some big ideas and I look forward to your help, suggestions and support as this thing hopefully progresses.

    Bill

This project sounds just fabulous Bill, major undertaking but if anyone can do it, it would be you.
Very cool building also, I envision wet plate folks running about the building and people hanging under the porch during a late June rainstorm, just a perfect building for the event.

You are more than welcome to use anything that I have generated at/from the Photostock events for promotional purposes if you wish. May not want my quotes however…ha!

I have recording capabilities which result in pretty high quality recordings if you need some original music for any video’s you may have planned. Music copy write issues would be one less thing to worry about down the road.

Bill...this is a fantastic idea, if I lived closer I'd love to help get my hands dirty and help build this.

I was the one with the Super 8 camera at Photostock last year, I still have the digital files of the footage if you want to make use of them, I'd be happy to throw them your way. And I plan on shooting Super 8 again (Have a much better camera now) and digital video at this year's photostock. Also if you want to use any of my still photos, go right ahead, full permission!

Bill, I am short in both time and money, but I have a couple of prints that I am proud of from the 2008 and 2011 events that I would love to donate to the project. And, of course I would help with spreading the word. That's a given.
If any of the online stuff I have created on Flickr, etc, could be used for your efforts, then you are most welcome to use any and all of them. All I ask for is credit as creator.

Awesome that this is getting one step closer to happening, Bill. You are a man with a vision in many ways.

    Best,

    - Thomas

Thanks for the positive and supportive response, you guys. I really appreciate it. A lot of people have been offering work which is very kind, but I'm afraid an auction would be too labor intensive for me right now. I've never done such a thing and it would be a big learning curve. However, I don't want the kind overtures to go to waste! I might use some as perks for pledges in a campaign if I can work that out. As I get this together more, I'll keep everyone posted.

I'd love to get that footage if I could, Andy. Not sure what I can do with it, but it could help. I'll also look over your stuff, Thomas and Andy for use in the promo stuff. Much appreciated. All will be attached to names.

    Thanks again, everyone!

WRT to Testimonials. Do you want them posted here or should we send them to you via PM? Additionally what should be included: I assume Feedback/testimonial, my name, event or workshop, and date. Let me/us know. I assume for video that we just need to send you the Vimeo or Youtube link.

Thanks, John! For now I'm going to grab testimonials from previous Photostock threads. People have been really nice and there is some good stuff there. I'll keep you posted on print stuff. I want to see if there is a limit to perks that drive pledges.

    Thank you Mark! Excellent.

And thank you very much, Andy! The film is great! Like looking at old, home movies. I can definitely use some of this.

Wow, Bill, that sounds amazing. What a wonderful idea! I'm happy to help out in any way as well. If I may, as you say, a print auction would likely be too labor intensive as a fundraiser, but if you go the Kickstarter route, and are looking for incentives, I'm happy to donate a print or two toward that. I'm sure part of the difficulty with crowdfunding would be sending out all those enticements that are offered if you reach the funding goal, and that might be a place where people can really give you a hand in terms of donations and shipping. Anyway, I'm excited at the prospect of a year round facility for photography in such a gorgeous part of the country. Good luck!

Thank you, Mike! As one of the first, you are going to be immortalized. At least your name. It will be on the bronze dedication plaque I am planning.

And thank you, Suzanne!!!! You will be on my list of people to come and lead a shop as well!

    Steve!!!

Sorry not to respond to this sooner. I would love something of yours as the backing track. I'm writing you an email right now.

Too bad I can't use the recording I have of "APUGGERS!" done to the tune of "Sweet Melissa" that you did a few years back.

I'm also working on a small book that will be the base incentive for donations on whatever fundraising method I go with. It will feature my Sturgeon Bay work and only be available with a donation to the project.

I'm also considering the logistics of doing a book with the work of people that have been. This too might be very labor intensive, but I think the final outcome will be worth whatever effort it takes.

As with everything, I'll keep you posted.

I'm soon going to be submitting my workshop project to Kickstarter and thought I'd share the video I've produced to help promote it. A lot of you Photostock veterans are in it, so have a look and hopefully enjoy. Don't link to it yet as I'm hoping you'll save that for when the campaign goes live. I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Thanks, you guys! No problem on the link, Thomas. I'm grateful, especially if you link to the Kickstarter when it goes live. I'm going to need it to be spread around out there.

    Thanks again for looking!

Your video is inspiring. I hope I will be able to help it along.

Thank you for some inspiration in the winter doldrums.
