The First Automatic Nikon, Nikkormat EL Chrome body only, 1972

This is a rugged all-metal 35mm SLR body which accepts all Nikon non-AI, AI, AIS and almost all other Nikon lenses with adjustable f/stops.

The EL was Nikon's first automatic exposure 35mm SLR.

The Nikkormat EL has an electronic shutter which works either on Manual or automatically on Aperture Priority.

"With the Nikkormat EL, automation is your servant, not your master.. You can override the automatic system whenever you wish and exercise personal control over exposure to suit your pictorial ideas"...-Promotional campaign for the first automatic Nikon-

I understand that Nikon originally wanted to call this camera the "Nikon EL" but were reluctant to do so because they thought that pros would never buy an automatic SLR, so they named it Nikkormat. Eventually, they realized that pros were using auto-exposure cameras and the name Nikon appeared on subsequent models.

Hi Karl, does it work properly? Sometimes the meter gets jumpy.

I love the EL, it's one of my favorite cameras. Unfortunately, I already have three, and cannot justify another!

    The light meter is fine

I just checked the battery check light and the lightmeter.
    The needle does not jump.
Its movement is smooth and accurate.
The shutter speeds are "right on" to my ear and the light seals are OK.
This EL is ready to go.

Bonus: The camera will ship with a 6 volt working battery.
