As a point of interest, it is illegal in the US to own the ink used for printing our paper currency.

I've always heard the paper is the hardest piece of the puzzle to acquire. And it's only made by the Crane Paper Company in Dalton MA, IIRC...

I once heard a Pt/Pd printer say that he asked the store where he bought his Crane paper about US currency paper. The person said she was supposed to report him just for asking. And that was before 9/11!

It may be Illegal, but not unlawful.

Also, its not OUR paper currency - its belongs ot the Federal Reserve/IMF (not federal or a Reserve), that is why our government forces us to pay "Taxes" - to pay the interest on the FRN's interest. Also why we can never pay off the National debt - The Interest on the FRN's is more than is in circulation.

    and your source is?

Actually, it isn't paper, it's linen, The blue threads are trimmings from Levi's. (source: Bureau of Engraving and Printing.) Plus, Cranes lost the contract a couple years ago. You can tell from the feel of the bills. They still will not sell the linen however. (source: Cranes sales rep.)

For many years the green ink was composed of chromium (III) oxide mixed with raw linseed oil. The chromium oxide was prepared by igniting ammonium dichromate. As it burns it forms copious amounts of the oxide. This reaction is the basis of the classical ammonium dichromate volcano demonstration that some people may remember from chemistry 101.
