Today I received a fantastic print by Per Volquartz, it is from his limited edition of 20 taken in 1978, the pictures is a landscape of the Grand Canyon North Rim and the price was a steal for this kind of high end print. You can see the image here:

Receiving this print was kind of like the beginning of my Art Collection. The prints feels and looks perfect!

I bought an 8x10 print of "Clearing Winter Storm", printed by Ansel Adams, at his gallery in Yosemite in 1976 for $25. Later that same day I saw him in the valley
and showed him the print. He quickly pulled out a pen and signed the back for me.
All I could say is "WOW, Thank You!". My friend had a copy of The Zone System Manual by Minor White and he signed that also. It was a good day for sure.

I have a beautiful signed book by Ansel Adams and some other signed photo books.

Collecting art can be addictive though but your off to a fine start Jaime. Keep up with the Carbon printing and people will be collecting your prints.

I go to a liqudation auction most Tuesdays after work these days. There is always the chance for astounding buys while there.

I have bought a tray of cameras and other bits for $10. It contained in part:

    - Two good 35mm p&s auto cameras with integral zooms's - a fuji 28-100mm and a pentax 28-150 - one even complete with it's lithium battery. One is now used by my son, and the other is now a glove box potential accident documentation ready camera.

    - Two functioning P&S 1.3MP Samsung's as functioning historical oddities of early inexpensive digicams; still work when fed a CF card and two AA's. One same dead one discarded.

    - One Canon s1a1 or something like that P&S digicam, which had an iodine poisoned image sensor, as so many made of that era did. Discarded, but it has 4-AA 2800mAh NiMH batteries that are sitll fully functional, and now provide a spare set for one of my Vivitar hot shoe camera flashes.

    - One Fuji Instax 210 instant camera missing a battery competment door. New functionally equivalent door replacement made from matt board and gaffer tape. Camera works great, and its Instax Wide instant film is widely available.

On a second lot I bought a Fuji Instax 500AF for $6. At the moment it's film eject rollers are jammed, and the viability of repair has not been fully sussed out. It's lithium CR123 batteries are good, and are now being held as spares for powering my wife's Canon Sureshot P&S.

A third lot bought for $2 contained a 12V 3.4Ah AGM lead acid battery that now functions as a second battery to extend the flash capabilities for one outing of an old Norman 200B pack and head flash that I use for location work. That third lot also included enough denture cleaner to keep my wifes' dental appliance clean for at least year. Yes, the combinations of things in aech lot can be odd.

It is an unual way to spend a tuesday evening, but it can be a great way to save money when I bring home household staples as well as my camera ephemera. Plus it is a night spent standing mostly, rather than flopped on the couch, being tempted to snack at each commercial break while zoned out watching TV.

Unusual perhaps, but if there was a similar auction near me, I would be there!

You Need To Visit Long Island !
If it's Tuesday on Long Island, I'm hitting the Thrift Shops off Sunrise Highway !
Since the year started I've picked up two Olympus Stylus P&S for less than $5.00. And I'm keeping it a secret as to where I found the case of four Alpa lenses, assorted macro accessories, filters, and the vase signed by Tapio Wirkkala !

Wade, Per was friends with Ansel Adams also, Per's print finishing is outstanding, I just placed the print out in the natural light this morning and the contrast are perfect. I am guessing that $25 in 1978 is the same I paid for this print today in 2011. That's a lot of photo merchandise for $10! Curt, having those signed books is great also, they must be worth a good chunk of cash today. I keep working on my Carbon, will see if one day I can sell something out there in the real world.

You're all going to hate me....

A fellow came into my work about a month and a half ago and we started talking photography. The next day he brought by a Mamiya 7 II with four lenses and full filter set with case...never used. How much? He said he was thinking under $1,500 since he bought it while he was still working, but now retired, he uses a 5D. Anyways, I can't get a hold of him at all anymore. I haven't paid a dime...
