In my opinion one of the best picture books of the former GDR is by Helga Paris, who happens to live just down the street from me (but I only met her once). The book is Diva in Grau. Häuser und Gesichter in Halle, the images were part of a controversial exhibition in GDR times. The ISBN is 3898123618.
