For many years the green ink was composed of chromium (III) oxide mixed with raw linseed oil. The chromium oxide was prepared by igniting ammonium dichromate. As it burns it forms copious amounts of the oxide. This reaction is the basis of the classical ammonium dichromate volcano demonstration that some people may remember from chemistry 101.
