I just checked with my 'vacation planning administrator' (read 'wife') and it looks like she has us booked for Disney in June and Michigan in August so I'll have to miss Photostock again this year. Perhaps someone going the the Photostock would like to trade and accompany 4 screaming kids to Disney....how about for a cash reward?? Maybe free film??

I just received a PM introduction and request from ďMykola Shynkaryk from Columbus, OH. I would like to join NE OH Gathering on May 12. I am new to LF and to Ohio too.Ē

Mykola welcome to our party. Thank you for sending all the information requested. I returned directions on how to get here from Columbus. Please tell the group about yourself, what brought you to Ohio and your photographic interests. At our event you will meet film shooters from several states, shooting many formats from 16mm to 7x17 and many steps in between.

If anyone else is reading this, wondering if they will be welcome, please send me a PM and introduce yourself. You will be welcome.

John

Thank you again for the invitation. I am newbie in LF photography. So far just shoot and developed several sheets of 4x5 film. So I am looking forward to meeting you folks to take a look on your prints and talk about LF.

Dan Henderson writes that he will be coming up from VA Friday and staying until Sunday. Glad you are coming Dan. He will be camping, which brings up the question of who else will be camping?

I’m guessing Dorothy, Jeff and Eva, Chris, Lee L, Mat, maybe Shawn, but I don’t really know. We have plenty of space. Who will be camping?

Mat Marrash offered to do a carbon printing demo this event. Trying to figure out a schedule, I asked him for details. He wrote:
“Friday night (~1hr) I'll be giving a quick overview of how to make carbon tissues,
with finished examples of both "glop" and pre-poured tissues (to save two days time). On Saturday (~2hrs), I plan on going over sensitization, exposure, and developing the finished single transfer print. The only preparations that I need to make will be access to your UV exposure unit, 1 tray of 50 degree "dead water" (distilled or normal that has been left out a few days), 2 other 11x14 trays, access to water over 120 degrees, and a drying rack or two. Earlier in the year, I'd mentioned the possibility of needing to come a day early to make a test strip with your UV unit, but if I plan ahead, I should be able to do a "test strip" transfer print Friday night while giving the overview.

Hope this helps outline things a little better. Look forward to seeing you next weekend!

-Mat”

Thanks Mat.
Some obvious questions are, will everyone be here Friday who wants to see the first part of the Carbon printing demo? With possibly 22 people at the event, how many want to see the demo? Is there enough space in our basement for that number to see? Do we need to think about shifts? Talk to us please so we can plan, rather than disappoint.

John,
Love to see the demo on friday. I should leave town about 4pm, at best with traffic that puts me in about 8pm so don't wait on me. If I can cut away from work early I will.

My coach, teacher, mentor, the lady who has pushed me to do that print over and over again until it was right, my favorite professor, Penny Rakoff will join us. She is especially interested in seeing Matís carbon printing, Charlieís new wet plate camera and the albumen prints Charlie and Mat plan to make. Penny will be teaching an alternative processes course this fall at U Akron. I took a shorter version a couple of summers ago making 7x17 Vandykes. I hope to be making contrasty negatives all summer for the coming course.

Because of the number saying they are coming, the interest in Mat’s demos, the limited space, we are try to put together two shifts of demos that will include carbon printing, Charlie’s new wet plate camera and albumen printing. We are also trying to factor in shooting time, ice cream time, time to show prints and good conversation time over great meals. Has anyone considered staying a week? We plan to print a tentative schedule with the best balance we can figure. Each person of course will then make their own choices within that. An abundance of choices is a new and exciting problem. Thank you all for the interest and contributed effort.

Dorothy,

Don’t worry about a cold night. We have a new three year old lady Labrador who is very snuggly. Just be sure the one you get is all light yellow. The mixed color ones with the big fluffy tails are the coyote.

Hello all, including Jeff, Jeff, Lee & Lee -

First, I'm glad I saw a reference to ice cream. Always need ice cream.

Second, I won't be there on Friday, so don't worry about me getting in the way of any demonstrations. Might be one too many Jeffs anyway.

Finally, John, I'm glad you invited your teacher. Our office has a few of her photographs in our collection - dating back to the time when our offices were in Quaker Square.

Can't wait for next weekend!

John I am a little late to the party but I was not sure of my schedule until now. Is there room for one more to your get together next week?

I have recently moved to Columbus from Texas, have been a film shooter for a loooong time, medium format mostly. I am sending a PM shortly with contact/emergency info.

Robert,

Welcome. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has 33,000+ acres. Making room for you shouldn't be a problem. I will look for the PM.

We can offer camping in our back yard or motels within five miles. The party starts 5 PM Friday. You are welcome any part of the weekend that you can make it here. How can we help?

Tentative Schedule, May 11, 12, 13th

Mat is going to give us two carbon printing demonstrations. One Friday evening and a second Saturday afternoon. This is to accomadate the number of people coming to the event, late arrivals and the limited space in my darkroom,

Friday: Meet here as early as 5 PM or when ever you come to town
Mat will sensitize the carbon. This needs to dry so the second part of the demo will start about 8 PM and go to 10 PM. During the drying period 6-8 PM, I suggest we have pizza dinner at the Powers’ place. Then look at prints. The dark room is available if anyone needs to load film holders or has a camera emergency.

A good pizza source is: Teressa’s Pizza 4174 Wheatly Rd. Richfield, OH - 330-659-9555. Please bring your own pizza and beverage. For those coming in on the Turnpike, we are exit 173. Terresa’s takes 15-20 minutes to produce pizza depending on the crowd. You might call ahead and pick up your pizza on the way in. Teressa is in the little shopping area at Wheatley and Brecksville Rd.

9AM Saturday meet at our house and see who is going where. The Fry Farm Museum is 1.4 miles NW on Southern Rd. I will take a group there and show you around. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is two miles east of us. There are three waterfalls within five miles. Lee L has kindly built and maintained a Google Mapbook with most of our previously visited locations. https://sites.google.com/site/neohapug/ I will have paper maps put out by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park CNVP. We can help you find things if needed.

4 PM Saturday Mat will start sensitizing carbon for demo #2. He expects this demo to continue to 7 PM. He will also be making an albumen print from Charlie’s new wet plate camera.

7 PM Saturday we will go to Musketeers Bar & Grille, 3027 Brecksville Rd, Richfield, OH. Tel: 330-659-4111. Leave our house going east toward Brecksville Rd. Turn left at the stop light. Musketeers is less than a mile on the right.

After dinner return to the house to look at prints.

Sunday morning shoot early or sleep in. 10 AM meet for a group brunch at Richfield Family Restaurant 4793 Brecksville Rd, Richfield, OH 44286 tel:330-659-9862.

11 AM Sunday return to photo projects. You are welcome at our house until 5 PM. Have a safe drive home. Thank you for coming to the gathering.

It looks like I will be able to make it to this session. My sister will be in town to care for Aged Relative, so I should be able to hang around for most of the show. Maybe I shouldn't have said that ...

Thanks for continuing to put these events on, John. They are always great fun. See ya'll on Friday.
