Fuji Price Increases

Probably nothing out of the ordinary with rising silver prices and whatnot, but now its official.

FUJIFILM Corporation has announced that it will implement a worldwide price increase for its photographic films. The price increases are substantial and it would be double digit, but will vary depending on products, markets and regions.

1. Products:
Photographic Films: Color Negative Films, Color Reversal Films, Black and White Films, and Quick Snap.
2. Date of Price Increases: Effective from May 2012

What do they mean by "double digit" ?

I can sort-off understand it, but it seems that Fuji (especially) is looking to pull out of the film business all-together, they cannot possibly expect that MORE films are sold when the price is increased "substantially"....?

I got around 45 rolls of Acros 120 in the freezer and have bulked up on Acros/Neopan in 35mm and I fear that my stash will out-last Fuji's commitment to film, seriously.

I got an announcement from Fuji Film Ireland of their price increase and they are as follows:

Fujifilm branded mini lab chemistry (film) +10%
Fuji Hunt branded chemistry RA4 +5%
Fuji Hunt branded chemistry C41 +10%
Fuji E6 chemistry +10%
Fuji B&W chemistry +14%
Fujifilm crystal archive paper +8%
Fujifilm reversal, professional & 35 mm film +20%
Fujifilm quicksnaps +10%

The reason Fuji give for the price increase is
"due to significant factory increases and the continued rising manufacturing costs and decline in demamd for certain lines"

Nothing new there and I am not surprised at the increases.

That's a little more manageable. I guess Ilford is next to raise thier prices.

Not a problem in itself , other than it must tend to reduce overall consumption, sales and profitability, which may in turn start (or continue) something of a spiral of rising prices. And, for color at least, the ongoing concern of availability of processing services or home chemical kits.

(At least my own freezer holds enough to last me many years, so I'll just keep replenishing stock as it get used :confused: ).

I'm little surprised that the greatest percentage increase is in film, where Fuji is quasi-monopolist (in colour material at least).

Yup.That's been the basic mechanism for at least the last 3-5 years with what's left of demand steadily shrinking against higher film/chemistry/processing prices and limited commercial processing. It's likely not going to be a good year for film.

Well, my point was "compared to double the price, or similar".

The Acros hasn't been the most expensive film out there anyway (in fact, it has been one of the cheaper ones produced by the 'big two').

I just supported the US economy by ordering $200 worth of Acros from B&H to Europe, be nice. :)

Their 120 acros 100 is way undercutting even Fomapan 100 and holga film on B&H. $3.20 versus $4-4.59 for Kodak B&W. From a pure business perspective, it has room to increase price and still be a solid contender, especially given the quality. I think acros 100 is the best 100 speed film available right now. (but I mostly use tmy2 since I think a faster film is more practical for mostly handheld medium format shooting)

Funny, I always learned that decline in demand drives prices DOWN... :p
