View Full Version : Iceland Anyone? billschwab 11-18-2005, 02:30 PM Hello All,
I have long been planning to put together a tour(s) to Iceland and was recently prodded by a very good photographer friend of mine (Lance Keimig) who does such tours currently to Scotland and Ireland. We have both had interest expressed by several shooters to do such a trip and now it looks as if we will do something in the coming year.
My question is are any of you APUGgers interested in such an adventure?
My plan would be to take you to some of my favorite places as well as find a few new ones together where you can be turned loose to do your thing. It wouldn't be much of a workshop type of thing, but we will both be on-hand to help in whatever way we can.
Many of you don't need me to tell you what an incredible place Iceland is to simply visit let alone photograph. It is a magical landscape. However, getting around, finding places to stay and eat in the more remote areas can be difficult and time consuming. The plan is to take that worry away from you and leave your time for shooting. One drawback can be the expense as well. Iceland is one of the more expensive places you'll visit due to everything having to be imported. As a group, costs can be kept down as well, although I am estimating that it will cost in the area of $2000.00 per person. You will also be responsible for getting yourself to the jump-off point in the states. Iceland Air leaves from Boston, Baltimore, Minneapolis and Orlando. Minneapolis is the easiest and will most likely be our gathering point before leaving. Anyone meeting us from overseas can be worked-out as well, but you will need to get yourself to Keflavik Airport outside Reykjavik. Travel from Europe will be less and your package price will reflect this.
If interested, PM me and I will put you on the list to be notified of developments as they arise.
Thanks for your time,

good luck! billschwab 11-18-2005, 04:13 PM Michael and Paula are leading an Iceland expedition early next spring, I beleive.
Thanks... I checked their deal... $4,250!!! I can pretty much guarantee we can go as a group for much cheaper.
It's a great place... that is for certain. Spring there is great too, and we might try for then, but I like the late summer/early autumn personally as several of my favorite spots are closed in Spring due to nesting Puffins and such.
Thanks for the info,

Oh crap...hang on a second...I've squandered all my holiday leave from work...:(
What you're offering here is a great deal, and I hope some APUG'ers take you up on it. When traveling to a place as far off the beaten track as Iceland, having someone with local knowledge can make or break a trip. Knowing up-front that you neither will, nor expect to be paid for coddling me makes it even more tempting!

No coddling, print reviews or sales pitches, just some serious scouting and photography.
Bill manalishi 07-17-2006, 05:09 AM Is this "project" still alive? If so, are there already dates?
Thanks m. billschwab 07-17-2006, 09:35 AM Is this "project" still alive? If so, are there already dates?
Thanks m.Sorry M. When we found it would cost well over $4,000.00 per person, we put it on hold. I would still like to do this, but more creative planning will have to be done to make it affordable for a group. I am hoping to offer the trip sometime in the next year through the workshops and tour schedule I am working on.... www.northlightworkshops.com
Bill Robert Hall 07-17-2006, 11:02 AM I would have interest in it Bill. I have some great interest, too!!
Please count me in. mikebarger 07-17-2006, 09:16 PM I have Fred Pickers Icelandic portfolio, looks like many great opportunities there.
Mike FirePhoto 07-17-2006, 10:35 PM Bill: I'd be extremely interested if it comes together. Just need enough advance notice to schedule vacation time, tell my girlfriend, plan a bank robbery or two...
Dan billschwab 07-18-2006, 09:18 AM Hi Dan, Robert and Folker,
I am looking into plans for Spring of next year and will post a proposed schedule and approximate costs soon. Initially for this outing I was working through a tour group there as well as a tour operation aligned with Lance Keimig. Both were very expensive, however I have made several trips to Iceland for much less. I am hoping to work-out a self-guided tour and cut-out the middle man.
Thanks for the interest.
Bill roteague 07-18-2006, 01:34 PM How is Iceland for shooting color? The only work from there I have any real knowledge of is yours, Michael Smith, and Paula Chamlee, all shooting B&W. Luridly green grass, black cliffs, dramatic clouds (if it's clear blue, set up your camera. There will be a storm coming along before you've finished), blue/white glaciers,...
If I go, I'll bring lots of colour film as well as BW. df cardwell 07-18-2006, 01:53 PM Iceland ?
Gee, Bill, it's a lot of trouble to go night-clubbing.
Can't you just stay in Royal Oak ????
d Scott Peters 07-18-2006, 02:04 PM I am interested in making photographs in Iceland. I was looking into M & P's trip this summer, but couldn't make it due business related issues. I know Michael and Paula were also going to have tents and meals supplied in some remote areas. manalishi 07-19-2006, 06:03 AM Sorry M. Nice, but none of the images are in color. david b 07-19-2006, 01:34 PM Bill,
please keep me posted on this as well. VoidoidRamone 07-19-2006, 01:42 PM http://www.boboconnor.net/iceland.html
These are some of the best photos from Iceland that I have seen (probably not the same subject matter as a lot of apugers are looking for). He was in this year's PDN top 30, too. I saw his work in person in Boston a few weeks ago and really liked it a lot.

there are tons of icelandic color images. but black-and-white is very rare. i think color photography in iceland is much easier. manalishi 07-19-2006, 02:58 PM http://www.boboconnor.net/iceland.html

what's so outstanding on those? plenty of those images are around. IMO VoidoidRamone 07-19-2006, 05:52 PM what's so outstanding on those? plenty of those images are around. IMO
I happen to think they're really nice. I like how the colors pop against the grey skies. In his interview in the PDN top 30 issue he said "I like to make extraordinary photos of ordiniary places." I think he did a good job of this.
I don't really understand what your point is when you say "color photography in Iceland is much easier." That kind of goes back to the old, worn-out argument about is a photograph better because it was harder to get the shot, harder to make it look nice, harder to..., etc.
