Have inherited a Zone VI type 1 enlarger...did not come with instructions.
Can anyone explain what the "lamp" knob on the Compensating Enlarger Timer
does. This is the first time ever using this type of light head, is there one setting easier to focus with than another? My 150 mm lens is open to 5.6. Find it very DIFFICULT to focus, can't seem to "see" the "grains". Use a "Peak" enlarging focuser II. Experimented printing for the first time last night, timing for "minimum" on either soft or hard variable contrast control on F8 is, I think, extremely long. Am I doing something wrong? Probably ask more questions as i start printing with this enlarger.........any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The lamp knob, to the best of my knowledge, is to adjust the lamp intensity until the stabilized indicator light is lit. (At least that is the way the separate stabilizer unit works). This particular model enlarger seemed to be noted for low light output. However, it may be that you have a tube burned out (if it is of the two tube variety).

I had a type 2, so things may be slightly different…… The lamp knob on the Zone VI TIMER should be set at max. There should be a separate controller for the blue and green lights, and on this controller is a switch to turn both lights at max for focus. Also on this controller is a knob to set light intensity… I set it at about 90 to 95 percent. For normal printing, set both green and blue to max, and still, the times are a bit long. To change contrast, reduce one light and leave the other at max. It’s a great enlarger, and you will soon see how good it works. Good luck!
