I sure wish I could go, perhaps next year. I'll be in Australia again in October.

I will have mounted two (high pitch emitting) deer repellant devices on my bumper by then. If those don't work, I'll have some body bags, filet knives..
and A-1 venison sauce.

Should be fun as it was this past year. Owens Valley has mucho potential for all things photographic. Perhaps I can enDEER myself to the locals and visit some secret off-the-beaten-path areas...

Hey All, I will most definitely be attending this year again.... I will wear my deer antler hat to make Blaze-On feel at home.... I will be in Yosemite before that too... For a few days before the workshop.... I'm gonna even try to convince my old man to come along... I do have a few people in mind that are suppose to fly out for the workshop also... Students from the college.... I hope to shoot mostly 8x10 and my restored Kodak 11x14.... I met Clyde Butcher and seen his gallery and studio.... He is a great photographer and got some great stories too..... I got some prints to show this time around... Per are you still thinking about the "Still Life" demo if we have time? I am flying out too cali in 2 weeks if anyone would like to get together maybe that can be arranged..... I will be in Bay Area.... for 10days.... well keep shooting and do not forget the "DEER" Long Live Old Bucky" LOL..... Later Hurricane Ted....

Where is Owens Valley?

Eastern side of the Sierras (Sierra Nevada Range) ie. east of Yosemite National Park and environs. Within the vicinity is Mono Lake, the steep eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada uplift, a ghost town, Bodie, ancient bristle cone pines, and fall aspen folliage if the timing comes out right.

...and in Bodie.

Yet there are millions of images still out there - just for the taking. Unique viewpoints, fantastic light, images never seen.

Unique images are out there right at this moment - but most likely no photographer there to capture these images...

To be there, to see, to be inspired, and to be able to communite what is seen and felt through photography - that is the challenge!

Who needs a tripod with a large format camera?

We all follow Wilbur's advice: Camera mount on jogging stroller - next to GPS unit and cup holder! (- And above chain saw and coffee maker!)

You guys can always join me in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia in October. I'm meeting an APUG member in Adelaide and driving up from there (1500km or so).

From personal experience light in Bodie Ca. and the Ancient Bristlecone forest in the White mountains E. of Bishop Ca. is the most challenging I've ever come across. Both are well over 8,000 foot elevation and regularly see relative humidity in low single digits. If it's a sunny day and that is the light you'll need to work with, I've seen 5 stops difference between shadows and mid zones. It is TOUGH to deal with. Per's method of pre-flashing the film to bring up the shadows will make believers out of you.

Folks smarter than me take one look and put the camera away. I love to wander in either place, and since problem solving is a photographers real job, I make negs even in bad light.

I ve heard you do not need a tri pod permit I need a heavy steel tripod with a chain to suspend the cast iron cauldron. I hope you all like venison stew. Sorry Dave, I think I'll need to pass on making posole this trip.

That's standard O P for me, I ve got the 3 wheeled stroller etc, and my own hard hat....but now the camera is bigger... and I was sort of wondering if the crane and fork lift would draw too much unwanted attention.... also erecting stem wall wind breaks really help when patiently waiting for the light.....

I'm glad I sent my note last night... This sounds like it should be a great outing.

Most photographers when visiting Bodie - or other mining towns - never get beyond the leaning buildings, old wood etc.

Wilbur - in my opinion - managed to shoot one of the best images I have ever seen of Bodie - last year during our free Eastern Sierra Workshop.

It draws the viewer into an metaphysical world full of mystery - decaying life - and almost cosmic content.

And yet all it is - is really just a window... or is it?
