We often receive requests to host a Fall Foliage Workshop. We have not done so before now, largely because of the scarcity and high price of accom-modations in Vermont and New Hampshire during “leaf peeping” season. This year we have secured accommodations at Lopstick Lodge in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, at favorable rates, for arrival on Thursday, September 28th and departure on Sunday, October 1.

Pittsburg is in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods, at the northernmost part of the state bordered by Vermont, Quebec and Maine. This is largely a wilderness area, too far away from "civilization" to appeal to most "leaf peepers," thus affording us a great opportunity to photograph undisturbed. Virtually every kind of shooting for Eastern Land-scape photography is available ... waterfalls, scenic lake vistas, interesting old barns and other buildings, rock formations, etc.

We will start with an informal barbecue Thursday evening as people arrive. Friday and Saturday we will shoot in two or three different locations each day, and Sunday one or two. On one evening, Richard will lead a discussion of camera repair in the field. All formats are welcome. As usual, Bruce, Richard and Ted will spend their time working with and helping you in any way we can.

We have reserved accommodations for 11 participants in 3 three-bedroom cabins and 1 two-bedroom cabin, scattered around the First Connecticut Lake. These are modern, well equipped lodgings ... rustic, but comfortable. All have satellite TV. We may be able to handle two more participants if we act fast but accommodations are already very scarce.

Contact me or Bruce Barlow (BBarlow690@aol.com) or Richard Ritter (rr@lg4mat.net) for details and additional information.

Ted,

Sounds like a wonderful opportunity. I'll check my schedule and try to make the trip. Its ONLY 750 miles from Richmond

No offense Bruce, but if you and I attend, then Ted will have fulfilled his promise. :-)

Will we need passports? Are you sure this won't turn into a Snow and Ice Workshop? Damn, but I've never been that far north before. I do remember snow on Columbus day in southwestern NY when I was a kid.

I have been in that area before, during a hunting expedition I did a few years ago, it is beautiful, I would be interested in learning some more information, such as costs and dates.

Thanks

Dave

I got the date: 9/28-10/1.
Cost for both workshop and lodging would help in deciding.

Ted,

Could you recommend a transparency film suitable for Fall Foliage? I need to experiment with color film prior to the workshop.

Thanks in advance,

John Bowen

John,

I shoot a combination of Astia and Provia for the most part. A tiny bit of Velvia and E100VS. Generally speaking I prefer the more more neutral colors of Astia and the latitude of Provia to the 'Disney' colors of the others, especially since I usually scan the film and can add saturation if it is needed.

Right now it is difficult to predict what this year's Fall Foliage will be like but if we continue to have the amount of rain we are having now and then go into a cold snap that augers well for spectacular colors that will do very well with Astia. Looking forward to seeing you at the Workshop. Wishing all of us good light ....

BTW, we still have some space for a few few more folks.

Velvia 100. Why would you ask that question? :p
