Most photo gear comes with a perfect, built-in id system….. the serial number. There is no need for yet another scheme to id our equipment. What we need is a central, easy to access database to log-in stolen equipment. Something everyone could access prior to a purchase. But then we would have the problem of getting law enforcement interested enough to investigate a suspected stolen item.

I understand the police here in the U.K. recommend you identify your valuables with a ulta violet pen with your house number and postcode, and that items they recover are looked at under a uv lamp to see who owns them .

The sad fact is, once photo gear gets stolen--it's usually gone.

This was made clear to me several years ago when I had personal items and a lot of my photo gear stolen. My insurance agent told me flat-out, "You will NOT get it back. I'll file the claim for you." She was right.

Keep the insurance premiums paid up.
