I am trying to publish a web that I have built using MS FrontPage. I am experiencing difficulty in having the server recognize my user name and password. Each time that I submit the UN and password dialogue box another opens in it's place with a message that this operation requires author permission for donaldmillerphotography.com80

I understand by virtue of what Sean has related that this needs to be published to port 21. My question is how do I modify Frontpage to publish to port 21. I don't seem to find where I can do that.

Additionally, my pages containing images indicate an load speed of 12 seconds on ISDN. Is this too long? if so, I need to make smaller images or lower quality?

Donald,

FrontPage always uses Port 80 if you use the Publish Site command; on the older versions you can't change it. This is because, the program expects the site to use FrontPage extensions, which most do.

Since Sean is telling you to use Port 21, that means to use FTP, which not all versions of FrontPage understand. The best bet is to get yourself a copy of FileZilla (I don't know the web address off hand), it is free. FrontPage 2003 does understand FTP, BTW.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to what the page says about your load speeds. Just try to keep your images around 200k and you shouldn't have any problems.

There are a lot of 'free' FTP clients out there. I personally dont use the frontpage or dreamweaver built-in ones. I prefer the manual approach (highlighting and moving the files that you want) as you tend to understand the site better (knowing which file goes where).
I use a freeware product called SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/) version2. It gives you an explorer type interface where you can open multiple destinations and a local browser session.

Sean, I checked the control panel of the server and the extensions are on. The problem that still remains is that the server does not seem to recognize my name and my password when I try to upload from FrontPage. I checked the spelling and the case sensitive wording of the password to no avail.

I downloaded and have tried the FPL sites that several have mentioned briefly late last night and thus far have been unsuccessful in uploading. I will work on this more today.

Donald - you might also want to find a source of some good pain killers (I understand a certain talk-show host may have some extras) in preparation for the incoming complaints that your FrontPage site crashed their non-IE machine. ;)

As you might guess, this happens to me frequently when I stumble onto a FrontPage site - about 60% of these sites crash my system when using either Netscape or Firefox.

Emperor Bill's way of promoting IE usage, I guess. ;)

OMG...and just when I was about to finish up my therapy. I think that I will go ahead and hang myself now.

I fixed that problem, I installed the Firefox plugin that blocks Flash and have not had a crash since.

O.K. an update. I have transferred the Front Page files completed thus far to the server using FTP. When I type in my domain name on the server, (www.donaldmillerphotography.com) I receive the directory that existed on the server prior to uploading. I transferred the Front Page files to public.htm as Sean had indicated. The page will not open from the browser prompt.

When I click on the public.htm folder, the site opens.

Any suggestions?

Donald, your files are one folder too deep. Just move them to the same level as the public_html folder, not in the public_html folder.
