Revival of the press camera!

Any one up for this...4 x 5 hand held street scenes at night....say designate a Wee Gee month to shoot and then do a gallery post...

see the post on this forum "anybody know this LFer...Wee Gee"

and note Dave Goldfarb's reference to his NYC halloween photography, 4 x 5 hand held, ...he sets a high bar here...could be fun....and a good cigar in the evening is a nice touch indeed...

Cheers,

Dave from the Dark side of Vegas :o

Do I have to use my Graflite, or is a speedlite ok?

Does it have to be a 4x5?

I've looked at David's examples, and of course many by Weegee himself, and I'm trying to think of how to closely duplicate the look with the stuff I have.

Why. This would make it a perfect reason to invest in a Graphic. ;) Everyone should really have one anyways.

I can only hope that the mob will pull a tommy gun hit on someone in my neighborhood. Wee Gee taught us that a Bloodbath looks really cool in B&W. Especially in Ortho. :o

I'm up for it. Sounds like a lot of fun. I still have 2 film packs from the mid 70's. Doubt they are any good anymore, but I've been reluctant to throw them out.

ROFL! I am laughing out loud just imagining what I would ever do with one of them! :)

My friends think I'm totally wacko using a 30yo Canon rangefinder with (>>SHOCK<<) film instead of going digital like all of the other lemmings. :)

The more I think of this, one place I want to shoot to try this look is at a big annual costume thing in February, and actually, I would not look out of place walking in there carrying a camera that's bigger than a toaster! :)

I suppose if Jackie K/O could drive one, I could too! :)

Oh well ... I really don't know what else I would use something like that. :)

Just be happy it isn't the 5X7 Linhof Technika that Ole used to use!

I believe Dave G. could post some 5 x 7's also if I'm not mistaken....I do have a Crown with a 90 mm and a 135 mm. I need to get a flash set up I have the starwars flash gun and am thinking about maybe bouncing a flash into it....or getting a bare bulb set up.

A proper hat would also be a nice touch...

Well. if you are like me, you would be watching all your 35mm stuff collect dust as they no longer get any use because the images from the Graphic are just that much nicer. :)

True, but my Crown was $250 all in. It is in great shape too.

Someone asked me why I would have so many cameras. (And I am not that bad, compared to some) I pointed out their collection of several thousand CD's.

The crown plays a tune I like to listen to once in a while. I like to listen to my 2D the best, for all its bulk and imprecision.... it must be that fat tube sound. :)

I am thinking my Polaroid 250 Automatic with the ISO 3000 film. However, since that is slightly smaller than 4x5, I don't know if that would be acceptable. My 4x5 camera is near the same dimensions overall, but weighs more than twice that; though it does take a Polaroid 405 back. So is Polaroid ISO 3000 okay, or something more stringent required?

Ciao!

I'm in if my Littman 45 is acceptable? I already have a cool hat!

I'd be up for it with my Speed Graphic, although given my lack of darkroom at the moment, I might have to be bad and use the Polaroid back. I would also need to find a flash from somewhere.

I also lack the right kind of hat... and I don't smoke.

A couple of years ago, a house across the street from me was set on fire by homeless people. I grabbed my Speed Graphic and a Grafmatic and went over. Police were holding regular folks to the opposite side of the street, but I walked right up to the action with the Speed Graphic and was never challenged.

Probably part of the reason is that I spent years as a TV news photographer, so I know how to stay out of the way, but I suspect the Speed made me look like I was supposed to be there. Didn't Weegee say something about that once?

Or maybe they were just afraid to challenge the nut with a 60-year old camera. Anyway it was fun. I'm in.

Speed Graphic on the way. Barrel lens if the FP shutter works, old Tessar if not.

Now where did I put those flashbulbs? And the nifty "lightsabre" flash?

I've got a hat too, and don't mind a good cigar. :D

I'm in.

My Crown Graphic even came from a police auction and has a close-up attachment for photographing finger prints at a crime scene! It even came with a case of #5 press bulbs...

Just call me scoop.

Looks like we definately have the interest and beginnings of an international group,

Nice response from the Crown Graphic side of the tracts....

to be a "purist" is ones choice....the idea is "in the street press type format-wee gee era" and use sheet film---

get your technique down-do the work and share it....

flashbulbs optional (J and C has them), hats and cigars optional, darkroom in trunk of car, nice touch but also optional.

Attitude.....not optional.

Begin with what you have, Crowns, Linhof, Littman, etc. whatever. Use sheet film. As mentioned, if you can pull it off, it is quite possible you won't be quite as enthusiastic about your 35 mm "street camera"..... you will have some magnificent prints...

OK, now I'm going to be awkward. I have seen pictures of Wee Gee, even got an idea of the kind of work he did, but are we going to do this on a specific date, and do we cover a specific subject or does it have to be something vaguely 'journalistic'?

Do you have a source, or do you make them?
