I'm sure that most of you are now familiar with the art and works of gorilla photographer Blanksy. For those of you who are not familiar (lucky souls that you may be) his most recent work was the smuggling of a picture of a gorilla in an orange jumpsuit into the bathroom of a truck stop near Disneyland*. Prior to that he has mostly been known for sneaking an exquisite alternative process print of a gorilla pushing a shopping cart into the collection of the Tate Museum in London labeled "This finely preserved example of bromoil dates from the Post-Azo era." What made this act even more sinister was that museum officials were not even aware that Azo is still available (though no longer in Canadian Grade 3). Blanksy is also known for his famous quote: "In the future, everyone will be more famous than me" - an admonishment astonishing in its humility coming from the great man.
The current Blanksy exhibition is being held somewhere in Los Angeles, but it has proven difficult to find even for the most devoted Blansky followers. The location was only revealed at the last minute through an anonymous posting at www.blanskygorillaart.com. The posting featured a view of the exhibition, which features a gorilla made up in clown makeup using a polaroid to take pictures of the attendees, that many have guessed could only have been taken with foreknowledge of the exhibition. There has been some speculation about the authenticity of the gorilla (after all, who could guess what goes on in the devious mind of this photographer?) but most have agreed that the gorilla is, in fact, a real gorilla after the Los Angeles Department of Public Health ruled that the clown makeup had not been approved by the city and had to be completely removed and replaced with a face paint approved for use on children.
Those attending the exhibit were unable to discover if Blansky was there, and onlookers had to result to indulging in mere speculation at the identity of the artist. Meanwhile, the gorilla continued to snap polaroids and, through an elaborate series of hand gestures and grunts, convince the attendees to pay the requisite $10 per instant print. If only that gorilla could talk, perhaps the identity of this elusive and poignant artist might finally be brought to light.
*according to reports there were plans to smuggle the photograph into Disneyland itself, but these were abandoned after the revelation that the Magic Kingdom was not, in fact, a free roadside attraction.
