For those subscribers seeking APUG access via mobile devices the new system is now up and running. It seems to be a good improvement vs. the last time I tried this. To access apug with a mobile device the url is: http://www.apug.org/wap

Brief info on devices:

"Pocket PC 2002 (Premium) and later Pocket PCs support WML, recent PalmONE and Sony CLIE PDAs come equipped with a WML supporting browser, RIM/Blackberry browsers also support WML, and the list goes on...
WiForums FF v3 features an unprecedented dual-markup WAP creation engine. Mobile devices which fully support WAP 2.0 (XHTML-MP 1.0 and WCSS) will be presented with one of the most eye catching, bandwidth efficient, pure WCSS WAP 2.0 mobile sites on the web."

Here are some screenshots of what to expect on your device:

http://www.apug.org/wap/apug_mobile.gif

I would not count on it being a full featured application but it looks like a good way to quickly check threads you are subscribed to as well as your PM's. Also, a forum search on apug when out in the field may come in handy, etc.

The system may need a few tweaks so I'll wait for feedback. Thanks!

Sean

Sorry to report this, but it won't work for me.
I'm on an XDA IIs, running Windows mobile 2003 second edition.
I can get at the full site OK, but not the WAP version.
Any Ideas?

Are you using IE on windows mobile? If so I do not believe it is wap compliant (but I am no expert here -still learning about wap), I have been told Opera's just launched mobile browser should work are you able to try that? I also know of 1 or 2 other dedicated wap browsers for windows mobile OS as well, they may have a trial version to test with. Failing that let me know and I'll contact the software company (they apparently supply small patch files for some issues)

With all due respect Sean, I'd be happier if more attention was being paid to restoring the full library of articles to the site before moving on with to new features.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but I that area quite valuable before the design upgrade and I keep checking to see if it's been restored.

Thats not entirely correct to say that mobile access is new. We did have this before and we obviously have a better version now.

I'm trying to get the core framework 100% then re-adding content (that included wap which we used to have). I actually have the entire day booked today to re-add the articles. Unfortunately re-adding the articles must be done manually in a very tedious way, it can take up to 5minutes to re-add each one and there are hundreds, most should be back today though..

Obviously Sean you are very busy but perhaps you would put two items up for consideration in the wap site. One would be to allow the last post show first and two would be to change the background colour on some of the links. They are blue text on blue and difficult to read.

last post to show first should be doable. as for the background, all my devices show blue on white. Is there a setting in your phone for background? hmm

Thanks Sean, I found switching to wml (was at xhtml) in the preferences made a big improvement in this phones browser.

I also found a few handy opitions to control the number of posts per page etc so it would be worthwhile for anyone to play around with these settings.

The double posting seems to be caused by hitting the back button on the phone browser after submitting a post or a PM. One to watch.

BTW I seriously dig the logo, now wheres that dude that does the t-shirts...>

No worries, most of them are done and the remainder of the articles and recipes will be up today :)

Sean,

Something strange is happening here. I can post replies but new threads. When I tried to post a new thread I get two blank posts! For example I tried to post a new thread in the MF Equipment forum and there only two empty threads from me there.

:-(

ok, it appears the recent work I've done with the search engine optimization has broken the wap stuff. I am making some changes to the seo stuff tonight that may actually resolve this in the process, stay tuned..

Have tried a few suggestions from the software makers without luck so far, waiting to hear back from them. I also use it quite heavily so hope I can fix this soon..
