Good idea, Gene! I'd love to see this show.

Gene,

Yup, I'm up for it. My [expletive deleted] daytime job has kept me from doing anything photographic related (or have any kind of life) for too long. I also plan to visit the opening of the Ansel Adams exhibit at the Fitchburg Art Museum about Feb 11 and bump the thread here with a mini-review.

And Gene: remind me to bring the DVD about "A Great Day In Harlem", Art Kane's great photo of all the jazz greats....

Actually, we could maybe combine it with the AA exhibit at the Fitchburg Art Museum, which will also be there in late February.

And Suzanne, I probably never told you how good your website is :-)....

Can we squeeze in both venues in one day? I am more interested in the O'Sullivan exhibit though.

Jazz... Jazz... did someone start a rumor that I like Jazz?! ;)

It's possible, but let me see the Fitchburg exhibit first....
And Gene, I almost answered your question with "Well, You Needn't" :-)

Thank you, Bill!!!

Looks like a good day planned. O'Sullivan in Andover then AA in Fitchburg! We'll need to check the ours of both museums, as I think they are each open only in the afternoon, and there's at least a good hour to hour and a half drive between them.

The museum with the O'Sullivan exhibit is open 10-5 Saturdays and
1-5 Sundays. The museum with the AA exhibit is open 12-4 both days of the weekend. I'd be willing to meet up and consolidate ourselve into one car -- I'm familiar with the Fitchburg Art Museum, going to Philips Academy would be new for me. People - pick a date - let's plan the details....

Thought I would bump this with a brief review, having viewed the exhibit today. Most of the photographs are dated from the early 1870's, the albumen prints are about 8x10 in size. There was a photograph of a Spanish inscription dating from the 1600's on "Inscription Rock" which I had never seen before. (I'm familiar with the one from 1526, where a ruler is held beneath the inscription to give an idea of scale.) The skies in all photos are washed out because of the material they used (this is explained in Szarkowski's little essay about O'Sullivan in "Looking At Photographs"), so the compositional problems were correspondingly greater. Bell has at least one composition up at canyon walls that caught my attention - pay attention to who made the photograph!

Well worth doing if you've ever wanted to see O'Sullivan prints....
