Just hooked up my old Quad 405-2 with Quad 34 preamp and Quad FM2 receiver. I'm a bit of a Quad freak, I have a Quad 303 with 33 preamp in my darkroom and another 405 with Hafler DH101 preamp sitting disconnected in my studio area. I better get than one going too.

Not that I have anything against the Japanese, hell they make wicked cameras, but their audio stuff sucks IMHO. Have been getting my ears assaulted by a TEAC unit for the past 2 years. Ouch!!

Got some nice jazz playing as I type, the scotch will be coming out soon.

Heck I even dug out my old Thorens TD160 and have it hooked up so I can spin some vinyl. Now that's analog!!

Ahhh yes, analog audio. I don;t have anything against CDs or MP3s, but I don't get the same satisfaction from feeding my computer into the sound system as I do when I drop an LP onto the Dual CS7000. Ok, it's playing thru' a Luxman tuner/amp, but at least the output is a pair of Goodmans. The activities of flipping the record over and giving it a bath prior to playing it is all part of the magic for me. It takes "time" and it can't be rushed. It's all part of my personal rebellion against "the quickening".

cheers

Duel and Sansui here. Just had my amp tuned, try that with the modern nonadjustable junk.:)

Thorens TD 146 here. Amplified by a not so vintage Jolida tube amp - I haven't decided what to play next. Analog audio can make nice subjects for analog photography as well.
Cheers.

Beware guys, audio spend can seriously damage your photo wealth! We Brits have our much respected Hi Fi World to keep us to the true (analogue) path.

Oracle table here. Used to have a Quad 34 pre but replaced it with a Spectral. Nothing like vinyl to make you feel all is right with the world.

Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1800 turntable here, which my parents passed on to me when they went all CD. I upgraded the cartridge to the top level B&O MMC1, which was a really big improvement particularly in terms of clear stereo separation. It goes through a McIntosh MX114 solid state tuner-preamp--not as nice as a good tube amp, but pretty nice for my budget, a Topaz mixer (my wife and I do some recording occasionally), and then a pair of Genelec 1030A bi-amped speakers. It's not super-high-end audiophile stuff, but sounds pretty good.

A very looong time audio junkie. used to work in my parents best friends shop when I was just a teenager. Quad has always been nice stuff. just bought an integrated amp from Cayin. if you haven't seen this stuff please do yourself a favor and see it. mine is a reproduced mac tube amp made like an expensive swiss watch. the pricing is outrageously good also. saved all my parents equipment when I sold off the house. the cayin pushes 40 wpc into infinity monitors. of course this is besides my threshold;kef;audio research; etc. ...
Best, Peter

It doesn't surprise me that analog photographers would also be interested in and able to appreciate good sound. Back in the day I had a small business doing "mods" on high end stereo equipment to get everything possible out of it. Was a lot of fun and I got to hear some wickedly expensive equipment.

Just for fun I did a full upgrade on a Sansewage AU717 integrated amp. Took it down to the local stereo store that sold that stuff and had them A/B it against their showroom model. Well my upgraded amp just smoked theirs. It was so stunning they offered me about 3 times what it was worth to leave it with them. I just couldn't let them have it and try and pass it off as an out of the box amp.

I love my vinyl. Prior to an ex-wife destroying about 50 direct to disk platters, I had a good collection of high end vinyl too. Oh well at least I made it out alive LOL.

Gee maybe we can draw a parallel between good bokeh and how vinyl sounds as compared to CD's.

I bet I'm the only one hear with The Source turntable. What a beast. I have assorted other analog (both valve and solid state) gear, some needing some tweaking. I have a TD160 as well. I started pimping it but got sidetracked. Need to finish that so I can give it to my son.

I've made this observation myself in the past (on a post here, I believe). I've got a Thorens 126 MK III thru a Marantz 1550 piping out from a pair of Boston Acoustics A100's. Not to age myself against some of the fogies around here, but this stuff is *almost* as old as I am! :D One of my favorite albums is Brothers in Arms, picked up at a little nook in Cow Town.

I love vinyl & am always on the lookout for '60s garage band 45s. [Teenagers 1964-68 who heard the British invasion sounds & then formed their own combos.]
I don't think vinyl was as good quality after the mid '70s oil shock. Records seemed to get quite thin after that. '50s & '60s vinyl is thick with deep cut grooves. I have 45s that are battered & scratched but play great because they were so well made. Also in those days the technicians knew how to master sounds for vinyl. I don't have any high end audio gear but I definitely appreciate the sound of good vinyl.

Yup, analog and tubes vs. cd and solid state AND digital photography....

I have all VAC tube gear...the VAC Phi Beta - and tube DAC. Actually the tubes make CD sound pretty darn good. My buddy has a fantastic analog set-up.

It's addictive, I tweak a lot. But I love classical and jazz on a great audiophile system....

A thrift store I go to has so much mint vinyl I have to shield my eyes when I pass that section; I could fill a car every time... :(

Long-time hifi guy here, too. My first job out of college in 1973 was as an audio salesman in what was to become Silicon Valley -- we sold McIntosh, Klipsch, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. Over the years I've had a wide variety of gear, tube amp and solid state, many turntables. Right now I'm running a Michell GyroDeck w/Rega arm and Benz Micro cartridge into a Trichord Research head amp into a Sonic Frontiers integrated tube amp (only 800 made), into Linn Keilidh speakers with Pyramid T-1 ribbon tweeters on top. Gotta replace the Linns -- a local fellow wants to sell me a pair of Quad ESL-57s. I'll stop now -- I shouldn't cross-contaminate between APUG and Audiokarma!

This thread is classic...and kind of funny for me. I'm also an analog audio guy...Dynaco Stereo 70 setup for my turntable. The funny thing for me is that I have three jobs all connected to this stuff:

1. Newlab (E-6/C-41 lab) full time
2. Amoeba Music (Vinyl by the boatload!) part time
3. I own a small business that sells and repairs turntables...literally, that's all I do there! (It's called Coelacanth Sound...)

Much like "goldie", I am always trying to get 60's garage records as well as 1940'-1960's jazz. I'm also in a garage band--all old gear, mostly tube except for my transistor organ and matching amp.

Vinyl is still music to my ears although digital audio has gotten tolerable. My system is comprised of a Goldmund Studio TT and Goldmund T3-F arm, Clearaudio signature cartridge, CAT SL-1 mkII Signature preamp, Krell FPB 600 amp, Martin Logan Quest-Z speakers, Transparent Audio reference speaker cables, Discovery interconnects. The TT and electronics on Seismic sink isolation bases.

I do have digital playback- Sonic Frontiers SFT-1 Transport and the Sonic Frontiers SFD-2 Dac. There is a wee bit of a problem with the digital playback, which sort of analogous to the whole digital/analog thing. While my analog playback system has components that are as much as 15-20 years old it still works and, knock on wood, is serviceable. Whereas my Sonic Frontiers SFD-2 DAC, which was very pricey, is kaput with no hopes of resurrection as the DAC chip is no longer made, no longer in stock and the company that made it is long gone. If anyone wants to try to repair it or use it for strange science experiments they are welcome to it. It will never work but because I paid so much for it I can not bear to just throw it out.
