I liked the artificial effect of the IR film on Frank's landscape. I haven't used IR film in ages. How do you focus IR film with a view camera? fhovie 05-24-2003, 12:14 AM </span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE (David A. Stop down and hope for the best - leave room to crop - etc. Got Frank's IR photo today - and a motorbike from Nigel.
Was that split-toned, Nige? The mid-tones look blueish compared to the highlights? Ole, the motorbike wasn't toned. Funny cause another person asked the same thing. All I can attribute it to is the Agfa Neutol NE developer!
Regarding how to focus a view camera with IR... I've read a formula you can apply some place if the lens doesn't have the IR focus shift indicator. No idea where and I don't think I would have bookmarked it as all my lenses have IR shift indicators. I forget to do it half the time anyway!
I got Donalds today so I can now understand some of the previous comments :) The peanut gallery at work had a real hard time identifying what it was and which way was up, which was amusing as I 'saw' the pic straight away. One person was seeing monsters and things! Great accompanying letter with it too Donald!
And finally, got 2 of Aggies farm series, about which I started another thread... Les McLean 05-27-2003, 06:00 PM Got Donald's at the weekend, would love to visit the location. Got Frank's IR of Arizona which brought back lots of memories, I've done a lot of camping there over the past 10 years and this reminded me of the long lonely nights. John, thanks for the card and invitation to the opening would love to be there but it's a bit too far for one night!. Best wishes I hope it's a great success and you sell lots of images.
My next offering is made and will be on the way in the morning, I'll tell you that it's the digital print of the delicate Tulip Stem that most couldn't see on the screen. fhovie 05-27-2003, 08:21 PM Wow! Two from Aggie and one from Frank S! Thanks -
Frank - great expression and lighting on the clown - no lost details and wonderfully sharp - very nice! -Interesting Toning -
Aggie - I really like your farm shots - very rich in tonality and to me - emotive - I do think you are on to something. I like them very much.
I am - as opportunity presents itself - capturing "modern" ruins. Which, in our state is often only 80 years old or less. I will walk around a site and wonder how to capture the dignity of what it once was. I find myself shooting a few rolls through my Yashica MAT from all kinds of angles trying to see what the film portrays as interesting without overt decay. I then figure out what the defining image(s) is(are) and then go back and do it at the right time of day - with the right weather and the right camera. I never expect to get anything really wonderful on the first try - but it gets me thinking about the images. I like the Yashica for this because it is closer in DOF and the look and feel that I will wind up with than a digigizmo or a 35mm camera. I did have a wonderful shoot at a family trip to the beach through on the long weekend - I figured with all that light, I could shoot Tech Pan. I am very happy with the results. The interesting response TechPan has to different colors and the ability to keep the lens open and get meaningful selectivity with DOF with 35mm was wonderful. Anyway - I ramble.
Frank Les McLean 05-28-2003, 06:42 AM Got two from Aggie today, the farm project is keeping you busy. Jeremy, I like the space you have created in your photograph of Cassandra. Frank S I like the clown image a lot. The borders of your card look as though they are fogged when compared to the other post cards printed on the same paper. I would check your safe light. If you need some guidance get in touch. frank 05-28-2003, 08:04 AM Hi Les,
Thank you. The clown image is the one I tried staining with tea. Could that explain the different look of the postcard edges, or do you think it may still be my safelight? I printed these up in 5 batches of 4, laying the exposed sheets face down on a stool behind me while I printed all 4, then processed them in those batches of 4, so there was plenty of time for fogging to occur.
Frank Phil Handforth 05-28-2003, 08:32 AM Greetings to all, Having just begun posting to the group a couple of days ago and not having time to read the full extent of this thread I find myself thinking I'm missing out on the fun here....what do I have to do to participate? jansenh 05-28-2003, 08:57 AM ....what do I have to do to participate?
:-) Be aware of the fact that the minute you enter the list postcards will keep dropping in constantly. Lots of cards! And there seem to be no end to it.... Phil Handforth 05-28-2003, 09:02 AM ...well I'm a bit of a hermit and don't get out much, so mail from people I've never met will be welcome relief. So, what do I do? Phil,
You send a mail to Nige. Then he puts your name on the list, mails the updated list to us all - including you - and we all return to the darkroom with a sigh to make one more print ;) Phil Handforth 05-28-2003, 10:14 AM ...then I do the same and make one for everybody on 'the list' I presume?
thanks for the keen sense of belonging Ole! ahh, I see I guessed the tea toning 'Clown' right! (just replied to Les's other thread) :)
Phil, yep, email me your snail mail and an e-mail addy and I'll add you to the list and send you the details to get to see the list. You don't need to send everyone on the list a card initially although you're welcome to. my stuff went out today in the mail. I need to cut down on the size a little as I had to pay full letter rate for my attempts at postcards.
lee\c Jeremy 05-29-2003, 12:32 AM Aggie:
Sorry, I made your postcard but accidentally put it in the hand with the mail I was picking up and not the mail going in the box! I will drop it in the mail tomorrow.
Jeremy Les McLean 05-29-2003, 02:45 AM [quote="frank"]Hi Les,
Thank you. The clown image is the one I tried staining with tea. Could that explain the different look of the postcard edges, or do you think it may still be my safelight?
Panic over Frank, it is likely to be the tea toning although I would still recommend an annual safelight test especially if you are using a regular filter type light and not the Zone VI type. Ailsa 05-29-2003, 04:34 AM In the next few days some people will be getting two postcards from me, and others, I'm afraid, will only be getting one. To explain...
A few weeks ago, when the postcard group was much smaller, I made 12 prints, but didn't get around to sending them out. Then, earlier this week I went to the darkroom and made 25-odd postcards of a new neg (from the Faroe Islands - do scream at me in a few months if you're sick to death of seeing pics of this place.) I decided to send the other 12 out anyway, just to the first dozen on my list, so apologies to the others.
If this doesn't make sense, please feel free to ask for a translation. I've just cycled nine miles into work, so my brain's a bit addled... I got the clown and it scared me! I got Aggies 2 cards in 1 there was a little wigglely thing in the middle that was out of focus cloud not determine what it was. Also got one from Jim. So far, all pretty nice work.
lee\c Jeremy 05-29-2003, 04:21 PM Like Christmas in May, I received 3 postcards in the mail today!
Aggie: mailed out your postcard today. I received farm series #4 and it looks great! I think I may have to check back with my previous cards and make sure I have 1-3 if not I may try to talk you into a trade for a copy.
I received Jim's contact printed(?) 4x5 shot of the National Cathedral and it looks spectacular. My girlfriend sewed my darkcloth together for me yesterday and will be ready to shoot this weekend. I've made 1 negative so far (looks horrible!), but may contact print it just so I can see wonderful tones like those in Jim's postcard.
Lee's 5x7 cowboy shot also came in today and it's also amazing! The highlights in the cowboy's white shirt are so smooth and creamy, is this an example of what pyro can do? Thanks Jeremy. that is not a pyro negative. That is a 5x7 TMax 400 negative. I shot it at ei 100 and processed it in Microdol-x with the second bath as Kodalk and contacted it on Forte Matt paper because I was not paying attention and thought I got glossy but got matt.
lee\c Phil Handforth 05-29-2003, 04:34 PM Well, I have submitted my name to the list and look forward to giving and receiving. Jeremy 05-29-2003, 05:14 PM Lee,
it looks absolutely stunning! I plan on putting all of these postcards up on the wall in my darkroom/bedroom. They are a wonderful source of inspiration. thank you very much,
lee\c Ailsa 05-30-2003, 04:50 AM I haven't got a cowboy print! Did his bucking bronco chuck him off the plane into the Atlantic en route?
I am LOVING Aggie's farm series - so atmospheric. |
