View Full Version : Postcards BarrieB 12-29-2004, 12:54 AM Greetings c6h6o3, My Postcard arrived here in Melbourne Australia on Dec 29th. 2004 but without any image 'Dry-mounted' on the reverse. There was no markings of the tissue either, there was a row of PINK Postal dots on the reverse however. I will just have to guess what that Grade 2 AZO image may have looked like Haaa Haaaa.
Cheers BarrieB. kwmullet 12-29-2004, 01:10 AM Greetings c6h6o3, My Postcard arrived here in Melbourne Australia on Dec 29th. 2004 but without any image 'Dry-mounted' on the reverse. I got mine a few days ago (North Texas), and the dry mounting had unmounted on mine. It's a stunning portrait of a sculpture. Wonderful image.
The dry mounting thing gives me shudders, though. As I write this, I'm clothes-ironing my run of postcards. I'd intended to use a sheet of granite a local flooring shop was cutting down for me, but they told me today it'd be at least another day or two and I didn't want to risk sending them out after the end of the month. Time will tell how well the mounts hold for the trip. (*nervous laugh*) David A. Goldfarb 12-29-2004, 08:14 AM Jim's arrived here with the mount adhering on the long edges, but detached in the middle. I thought maybe you glued it on the edges instead of dry mounting. Lovely print. Bruce Osgood 12-31-2004, 09:29 AM Jim Shanesys' lovely "Monastery I" got here a couple day's ago and is held together by one corner. I don't know the Strathmore Watercolor Cold Press routine but I'd suggest re-examining the process.
I've gotten a lot of cards this round and would like to thank everyone who is participating. The list is to long to name. c6h6o3 01-01-2005, 02:15 AM Jim's arrived here with the mount adhering on the long edges, but detached in the middle. Well, now I know. It's just as well, since Pearl is out of the postcards anyway. At least you guys got to see the print. From now on I'll stick to the notecards, which come with envelopes.
I've sent Barrie a replacement in an envelope.
I chose that particular one because it prints easily straight, and with a really short exposure time. I printed 40 of them in less than 45 minutes. I was cookin'. kwmullet 01-01-2005, 07:59 AM My cards for the folks outside the US went out yesterday. I mis-counted on my postcard printing session and came up short a few cards, so I'm doing another run today or tomorrow before I send out the domestic ones. I suspect everyone will get them about the same time.
I was going to print the remainder yesterday and cruise by the post office just before midnight so I could say I mailed them all in December, but Jeremy Moore & I got together at one of the local university campuses to do some shooting with our 50's-era Kodak Hawkeye Brownie cameras. I'd underestimated how much time we had left before dark and got there just as the sun was setting. Jeremy luckily had some HP5 with him. We ended up shooting 90% of our film wedging our cameras against trees, signposts, rocks & the like and doing bulb exposures then coming back to my place and processing both by inspection in Pyrocat.
I hope to get my domestic cards out within the next couple of days.
I'm now officially addicted to the postcard exchange. I love working on this project and sharing actual tangible prints with people. Also, since I get the vast majority of my personal correspondence in E-Mail, it's so great to actually look forward to the postal mail arriving with the exciting possibility of getting another postcard!
-KwM- Jim Moore 01-05-2005, 11:48 PM I think that I'm going to order one of these to try..... Looks like it might come in handy when I can't find any more Ilford postcard stock.

Jim John McCallum 01-07-2005, 03:04 PM It was a 4x5 contact print of a stream edge with native bush in the background. Titled 'Foam and Flora'.
Kevin mentioned that he hadn't received his postcard from me yet. Since they went out a month ago, I suspect it might have gone astray. I was wondering if anyone else had not received their one from me also?
I've received a handfull of postcards so far. Some really beautiful cards.
John.
Edit: Jim, your postcard came in the post today (Murphy's Law). It really is lovely. BWGirl 01-07-2005, 03:09 PM I have not received it either, John. I'll keep looking for it! :) Cards from Kevin Mullet and Jim Moore arrived today. Great work! kwmullet 01-08-2005, 12:04 PM Cards from Kevin Mullet and Jim Moore arrived today. Great work!
I'm very pleased to hear you liked it. I've been on apug for very nearly a year and aside from my avitar, that's the first image of mine I've shown anyone.
I'm still working on getting the domestic cards out. I double-goofed. First, I undercounted (no hanging chads, though) the name list and produced too few cards in my first run. By that time, my tray line was expended and I made the leap from Ilford MG IV developer, citric acid and Kodak rapid fix to Ansco 130, water bath and PF TF-4 fixer. With the new tray line, it took a few short sessions to find a new best way to print the postcard. I think I'm one or two burn/dodge adjustments away from locking down and doing a batch run to get the domestics out. After that, it'll be a lot easier to get them out, since I can dry mount and annotate with my 3-year old mini-me running around more or less underfoot.
Even though my timliness leaves much to be desired, one of the things I enjoyed most about this project was coming up with solutions of how to best stiffen the prints and annotate them. I'm looking forward to Ilford's postcard stock being expended so I can see how more of the rest of the group addresses the issue.

I've sent Barrie a replacement in an envelope..Yes Jim, and it has arrived in excellent condition, many thanks for the 'Special' reprint edition, it made me feel rather special. Linda, my wife loved the little postcard too.
Cheers Barrie. ( This group will make a printer out of me yet ) Ailsa 07-01-2005, 09:34 AM I'm loving all the postcards I've received so far - thanks everyone!
I (finally) dropped mine in the post about an hour ago, so they should be spreading themselves throughout the planet over the next few days. I have to admit it's not my best ever effort, but I'm delighted to say that I have found myself another darkroom to hire, so I look forward to becoming a fully-fledged postcard participant once again!
Have a great weekend everyone.
Ailsa David A. Goldfarb 07-05-2005, 09:25 PM Lots of nice cards have come this way, too. Mine are in the rinse and should go out tomorrow. Sometimes it can take five or six days for mail to get from Sydney to Melbourne, and yet mail can get from the other side of the world to Melbourne in a few days. :) Aggie 07-17-2005, 05:53 PM I heard some wonderful news last night. Ilford is bringing back the postcard stock. I guess my hording of so many boxes must have convinced them there is still a viable market. Aggie, don't start rumors which could lead to violence if they are untrue! How reliable was the source of this wonderful news?
Waiting with bated breath!!! Aggie 07-17-2005, 06:00 PM tomtom (apug id) who works at looking glass spent three hours talking to one of the head people direct at Ilford (he knows Les McLean) He told her about the postcard stock and there are other things coming back as well. I will find out more when I go have lunch with her soon. It is a very very reliable source since they sell a lot of Ilford products.
