View Full Version : A little bit of news about Black & White Photography and me... Ailsa 08-01-2007, 06:05 AM This is just to let everyone know that, a few weeks ago, I made the very difficult decision to resign from my position as editor of Black & White Photography, and Friday will be my last day behind this desk. As of Monday, I'll be officially freelance, and making the 20-second commute from bedroom to spare room!
Leaving the magazine, and my fantastic colleagues, is going to be the most enormous wrench, but I plan to remain very much involved with photography - especially writing about it, and hopefully taking a few more pictures than I do now.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at APUG who has been so supportive of Black & White Photography over the past few years. This website has been a fantastic resource for me, and I know the magazine just wouldn't have been the same without the contributions so many of you have made. Thank you all. Steve Smith 08-01-2007, 06:13 AM Good luck with your future plans. Black and White Photography is now the only photography magazine I buy. I hope it continues on a similar path. Is there a new editor yet?
Steve. Pete H 08-01-2007, 06:13 AM Ailsa,
Many thanks for all your work with B&W Photography. You've really made it into a worthwhile magazine.
All the best for your new endeavours too!
Peter Les McLean 08-01-2007, 06:19 AM Hi Ailsa, best wishes on your decision to take this step I know you will succeed. I'm currently in the US but will be home on Friday and will give you a call. tony lockerbie 08-01-2007, 06:19 AM Thanks for the good work on this magazine, the only one really worth buying. I hope the new Ed. keeps it on track and that you find the freedom to make more images.
Tony Wow....here's a surprise to wake up to! My goodness, Ailsa, what a major decision. You've done wonderful work for that magazine, and still had time to show up and make a contribution here (the monthly shooting assignment for instance). Your column in the magazine has always been the first thing I read, and since I usually start from the back, that's saying something! :)
Trading pics with you was a real treat, and you've been an absolute pleasure to know. I hope we don't lose touch in the future. Best, best wishes in your new enterprise. And......I do envy you your new commute (mine's 100 miles a day 'round trip  ) catem 08-01-2007, 06:24 AM Good luck Ailsa! You've done a fantastic job, & I hope all goes well for you. RH Designs 08-01-2007, 06:56 AM Good luck Ailsa! You've done a fantastic job, & I hope all goes well for you.
Hear hear! Best of luck Ailsa. Tom Kershaw 08-01-2007, 07:15 AM Best wishes for your new venture Ailsa.
Tom. Andy K 08-01-2007, 07:36 AM Good luck Ailsa, B&W Magazine is the only photographic magazine I buy. Let's hope it does not now go down the pan like so many others. Kevin Caulfield 08-01-2007, 07:42 AM Thanks Ailsa for your great work on B&W and best of luck in the future. B&W is by far my favorite photo mag and I am happy to be a subscriber. Best of luck with the working-from-home thing. That's what I do, and it works wonderfully for me, so I hope it does for you too. You have to love that 20 second commute. :) SuzanneR 08-01-2007, 07:45 AM Best wishes, Ailsa. Black & White is a great magazine, and hope you'll still be an occasional contributor there! BWGirl 08-01-2007, 08:03 AM Good luck on your next great adventure! Does this mean we get to see a wee bit more of you here? Hope so! :) photomc 08-01-2007, 08:04 AM Good for you, Ailsa...your work at B&W was great. Now on to more wonderfull adventures. Please keep us posted, think most here will want to know what comes next for one of our favorite people. zenrhino 08-01-2007, 08:17 AM Wow. That takes huge courage! Best of luck! FrankB 08-01-2007, 08:32 AM I have a complete run of B&WP UK and it's the only magazine to which I currently subscribe. It was actually one of your editorials that first told me that APUG existed! (You've clearly got a lot to answer for! :D )
I've got enormous respect for what you've done there and I wait with bated breath to see what you're going to do next!
Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be superb!
All the very best to you, Ailsa! ricksplace 08-01-2007, 08:56 AM I can't remember the details, but it was something you wrote that helped me find this place, which is the only photo site I belong to.
As a Professor teaching Human Resources, I can say that a career change for personal reasons is probably the best kind of career change, and often the scariest. Achieving a balance between work and personal life is something that many people search for all their lives and few people find.
I left the rat race of industry years ago in order to spend more time with my kids (I'm a single parent). My salary is probably half of what it would have been if I had stayed in industry, but I'm happy, and I have a relationship with my kids that is just amazing. I hope you find your balance. Enjoy and good luck. Bob F. 08-01-2007, 09:07 AM This is very sad for us, but I'm sure it will be a great new chapter for you.
You took B&W Photography magazine from nowhere to being the only truly independent photo magazine not driven by the whims of advertisers in the UK. Managing to make a success of such a narrow-interest title is genuinely something to be proud of.
The very best of luck with your new career shift.
Bob. Best of luck Ailsa, flicked you an email as well.. Konical 08-01-2007, 09:42 AM Good Morning, Ailsa,
Thanks for all your work. Black and White is at the top of my list, too. I hope that your successors don't do anything to foul it up.
Konical keeds 08-01-2007, 10:39 AM Best of luck Ailsa. Black and White is a great magazine and I hope it stays that way in your absence. I wish you every success in what you do next. Ian Leake 08-01-2007, 12:43 PM Good luck for the future and thanks for the past.
Ian filmnut 08-01-2007, 01:19 PM Alisa;
Best of luck, I wish that I had the courage to do what you're doing.
I have enjoyed the Black and White magazine for a couple of years now, since I discovered it on a newstand with other photo mags. It's now become my favourite! Since I have spent most of my career as a professional printer, I have particularly enjoyed the "Printer's Art" section, plus the reasonable balance that you kept between film and digital that others have lost.
I also wish your sucessor best of luck, as they have big shoes to fill!
Keith roteague 08-01-2007, 01:29 PM Ailsa, best of luck on your new endeavour, may you find success and fulfillment.
Black and White is a great magazine, and while I always kept hope for the odd color picture or two, I enjoyed it tremendously. Dave Miller 08-01-2007, 02:00 PM A brave decision Ailsa. I wish you well in whatever direction your new found freedom takes you. |
