View Full Version : Monthly Shooting Assignment, November and December 2007--Portals Sanjay Sen 11-13-2007, 01:44 AM The idea of allowing picture posts in the MSA thread is to increase participation so that members who do not have privileges to the gallery can also post their photos for the MSA. This is all for fun. I understand that judging can be a little tricky, but there are ways to get around that.
I feel that too much complaining every month spoils the fun for everyone. If you don't like the rules, don't play the game. Quite simple, as I see it.
Thanks to John for keeping this going, and to all who have participated and have been "victims" so far. I hope to have something to submit for this assignment.
Good luck to all!
Best wishes,
Sanjay jimagain 11-13-2007, 01:45 PM Oh boy, time to be the curmudgeon again.
In the past MSA posts were put in the MSA Gallery.
Now they just show up in thread - becomes some kind of "horse race" or one-upsmanship game this way to see who can "out-post" in the thread.
Just what happened the last time.
I know, permitting "entries" in the thread give a chance for Members to participate who, not being Subscribers, cannot post to the MSA Gallery.
My feeling on that is "too bad". But I'll just go away because I find this "thread approach" with postings only 12 days into a 61 day period to be too "in your face".
I presume this was in response to my post.
I certainly didn't mean to try to "out post" anyone. It is true the photo went into the regular gallery first but it was by mistake. I reposted the photo to the MSA gallery after I found out it was posted wrong. I guess I don't know how to do the MSA quite right.
I also presumed the 61 day period had no limit on how long we had to wait before we posted. I was intrigued by the subject, I had an idea, I shot it and I entered it. To me it represents no horse race and no one upsmanship. I was just having fun. jimagain 11-13-2007, 02:07 PM I just deleted the photo from the general gallery which also deleted it from the MSA gallery. I didn't know that would happen. So I reposted to the MSA gallery the right way (I think) but it also brought the pic up on the latest gallery post thumbnail. Also it removed the link in my original message. So (should I do this I ask myself?) here's (http://www.apug.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=29626&cat=508) the photo again, I hope in the right gallery.
Shoot, I just looked and it's still in the general gallery. This whole thing is just too darned complicated.
Sorry everyone. John Bartley 11-13-2007, 03:16 PM Ok, as the person who has been driving the MSA for the last few months I guess it's my turn to be miserable .... and hopefully
this will be the last post on this subject in this thread
no-one will feel that they have to prolong this pain any longer with a response
we can all get on with the MSA.
I know, permitting "entries" in the thread give a chance for Members to participate who, not being Subscribers, cannot post to the MSA Gallery.
This (quoted above) is exactly the reason for it. This is called being "inclusive", and I prefer inclusive, so this is how it will continue to be as long as I am organising it.
My feeling on that is "too bad". But I'll just go away because I find this "thread approach" with postings only 12 days into a 61 day period to be too "in your face".
As much as I dislike the idea of losing anyone from the MSA group, I'm thinking that it might be better if you do leave George. It's entirely up to you, but you are obviously not satisfied with the way it is run, yet you will not step up and run it yourself, even after having been invited to do so. You are certainly welcome back if you feel that we have an assignment that you can participate in without causing yourself any mental stress.
sign me "disappointed"

Sorry everyone.
Not to worry Jim ... and there's certainly nothing to apologise for. Please keep posting and linking ... the more the merrier and while we would prefer that photos be posted to the MSA galley, it's not absolutely necessary. Anywhere that you can upload the photos is fine as long as we have a post in this thread with a link so that we can look.
cheers eh? :) Thomas Bertilsson 11-13-2007, 04:44 PM Jim, I like your idea a lot. Very well thought out!
- Thomas Thomas Bertilsson 11-13-2007, 04:58 PM For the sake of simplicity I have also posted my image in the MSA gallery, so that last month's winner has less work to do when axing my contribution in favor of somebody else's... :)
I am terrible with not finding out the rules before I play.

- Thomas jimagain 11-13-2007, 05:07 PM Thanks John and Thomas. I appreciate your words. John Bartley 11-23-2007, 01:58 PM There's a couple of great new photos in the MSA gallery folks - have a look and don't be shy to add some of your own :).
cheers eh? There have been some wonderful images posted to the galleries that could have been entered in the MSA. (Fer instance - Cosmonaut posted a couple yesterday.) Go ahead and make my job as this sessions judge really tough. Let's see some more great images entered!
Sly Sanjay Sen 12-10-2007, 06:36 PM I added my contribution to this MSA. Hopefully I will be able to add one more, provided the weather cooperates.
Best,
Sanjay mabman 12-12-2007, 09:09 PM Ooh! There are a couple of great portals in my downtown area - if the weather cooperates I'd love to participate... We'll have to see :) John Bartley 12-25-2007, 04:03 PM Hey folks - Merry Christmas to all :) !! I'm just back from Christmas lunch with my parents and thought I'd check out the gallery to see what's happening here .... WOW ... holy cow ... Sly, you've got your work cut for you don't ya' know?? There have been a lot of fabulous photos posted, in fact I don't see anything except great photos, and this is going to be one of the best and toughest to judge MSA sessions yet.
Thank you all !!
Keep 'em coming eh?
cheers copake_ham 12-28-2007, 12:08 AM To be honest - I can no longer figure out how The Gallery works!
I think I uploaded these threes shots for "Portals" but I'm not sure.
Oh, and it seems that my overall Gallery "allotment" is getting quite filled - yet it seem a real PIA to try and cull the pics!
Anyway, I posted these there (I think): John Bartley 12-28-2007, 07:27 AM Hey George,
Thank you for uploading these photos. I really like the photo of the woman with child under the stone arch. Is it in Mexico? or maybe Spain? The door knocker is great also. I can hear it thumping against the wood.
cheers copake_ham 12-28-2007, 11:14 AM Hey George,

Hi John,
Mexico - at an old monastery (now museum) near Oaxaca.
I have tons of "door" pics. I never realized how often I shoot them until this assignment. Not sure why.... jimagain 12-28-2007, 04:28 PM Wow! There are some awesome images here. Sly I wouldn't want your job right now for a million bucks. Well...maybe a million, but not a dollar less:) MattKing 12-29-2007, 03:15 PM I've uploaded my entry. I took a bit of a different approach. I'm interested to see what others might think.

Matt Last two days for entries into the MSA "Portals". It's already going to be ridiculously tough to make a choice - but I'm game for one or two more entries. Glutton for punishment me. Sly Fintan 12-30-2007, 10:44 AM I've never entered one, can someone point me to the rules.
Thanks
Fintan Uh-ho! Fintan's going to enter!
Just go to the 1st page of this thread.
Look forward to seeing your submission.
Sly Andy K 12-30-2007, 11:09 AM Ok, I've had a go too. Only photograph I have of a 'portal' shot this past month. Schlapp 12-30-2007, 11:28 AM I did one too :-) John Bartley 12-30-2007, 08:40 PM I posted my contribution to the "Portals" theme today. It's a non-competing entry because it's an old photo and I can't remember what I did to the scan (I do know that it's a print scan). Photos don't normally cause me any mental stress - I can take 'em or leave 'em, but this one bothers me because I can't seem to get the photo that I visualise when I'm set up on site. This was a 4"x5" negative enlarged, but I think my next (and final!) attempt will be an 8"x10" contact print.

cheers eh? copake_ham 12-30-2007, 11:29 PM Great shot, John.
Wow - it's great to see the oft-neglected MSA get so much attention.
Sly, you have your work cut out for you. |
