View Full Version : Monthly Shooting Assignment, November and December 2007--Portals John Bartley 11-02-2007, 06:57 AM Hi Folks,
We're back again with another session of the Monthly Shooting Assignment :).
Our winner of the July and Aug session was Sly for the photo "Straw Hat" and so Sly will be picking the theme and doing the judging for the current session.
For any new readers, here's the basic idea of the MSA :
1. read the MSA assignment
2. take your photo according to the assignment guidelines
3. you can post your photo in the MSA Gallery : Click Here (http://www.apug.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=508) or,
4. you can host your photo elsewhere and link to it in this thread or,
5. you can post it right in the message here and it will show as a clickable thumbnail.
6. it's all for fun, there are no prizes, but at the end of the MSA, Sly will choose a "victim" to lead an MSA in a couple of months time.
7. if you have any questions, please email or PM me and I'll be happy to help.
So, without further delay, heeeeerrrrr's SLY !! Take it away Sly :)
cheers What do you call a bunch of APUGers spread out here and there around the world? A film of photographers? :D
Welcome to the Nov-Dec 07 monthly shooting assignment. I have chosen "Portals" as the theme. In the Oxford Dictionary this is a "...door, gate, or entranceway..." I know you can all find lots of these, so get out there rain or shine. Let us see what you can do with the portals all around you. Have fun! Sly dferrie 11-02-2007, 11:18 AM Sly,
Nice one! Sounds interesting and as I like the subject I might actually pluck up the courage to give this one a go!
David MattKing 11-02-2007, 02:04 PM Maybe a moderator can add the word "Portals" to the thread title - to help whip up interest!
Matt Xia_Ke 11-02-2007, 04:03 PM Ooo, this one has lots of possibilities. Nice choice Sly :) Should be fun to see how this one progresses.
Aaron John Bartley 11-02-2007, 04:57 PM Good idea Matt - I'll inquire about it.
I like this theme too. I can think of all sorts of possibilities for this one.
cheers eh? copake_ham 11-02-2007, 11:45 PM Great idea.
I like this one.
Will probably do a "realistic" one - but have to scratch the brain about something more "esoteric".
BTW: You did say "port-o-lets", didn't you? :o ;) Black Dog 11-03-2007, 04:12 PM This fits in nicely with what I'm doing right now, so I'll probably give it a go during one of the rare moments when I'm not cooking or in the darkroom.... pcyco 11-05-2007, 06:23 AM hallo

thomas barbara ann 11-05-2007, 07:09 PM Well Sly, I was so enthusiastic about your Nov/Dec topic I went and bought another camera! Actually, my old workhorse Olympus developed (no pun intended) a glitch, and when I took it to be repaired, I was told they no longer can get parts for it. :( Then, I tried to get another Nikon SLR and all I could find was digital, digital, digital! Finally picked one up on e-Bay but I'm begining to have my doubts about the future of film... Thomas Bertilsson 11-05-2007, 10:31 PM OK, my feeble attempt at a 'portal'. For you subscribers, here is a link to the same image in the gallery:
http://www.apug.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=29348&cat=500&ppuser=395
The text in the gallery reads:
Time Portal
Inside and outside this door lurks things of old. It's interesting how calming and liberating old things can be while existing in modern day society with all of its stresses and time crunches. It's like flying back in time to my upbringing partly on my grandfather's pig farm. Usually inside all of these old barn doors was cool stuff...
- Thomas Sanjay Sen 11-05-2007, 11:58 PM Thomas, your "feeble attempt" is great! I love it... dferrie 11-06-2007, 05:26 AM OK, my feeble attempt at a 'portal'.

Thomas,
There is nothing feeble about that image, it's really great!
David goros 11-06-2007, 05:49 AM Hi all,
I'm going to post here (if I'm able to) a picture I took of a portal inside another portal. It has not been taken within the time limits of this assignment, but it is exactly the chosen theme so Moderator, please remove it if you consider it is not the appropriate place to do it.
It works, so I'll explain it a bit. It was taken in Cambridge Trinity College main portal and, as you see, it is the Porter's small office.
Cheers John Bartley 11-06-2007, 07:02 AM Thomas and Alfonso,
I think that both your submissions are great!!
Thank you both for posting.
cheers eh? A porter's portal, I love it! And Thomas's entry is terrific too. 2 entries already, and they are both great. How will I choose a winner in 8 weeks time? At this rate of going, I don't think I'll be able to come up to scratch. As for how you will choose a winner, I would think - with great difficulty! :D
David copake_ham 11-06-2007, 06:22 PM Sorry, I cannot let this "dumb pun" go until I post this.
NOTE TO ALL: This is NOT my "official" Nov-Dec 2007 submission to the MSA! I'll post that to the MSA Gallery later on. :D Thomas Bertilsson 11-06-2007, 09:47 PM George, I would love to hear how you tie it in with the concept of 'portal'. A way to 'relief'? Aaaaahhhh... Instant weight loss? Funny contribution. Thanks for the laughs.

Look at the title line to my post. ;) jimagain 11-12-2007, 11:18 PM Great assignment. I'm really intrigued by the esoteric possibilities of "portals". I hope I'm not slightly askew of the specific "portal" theme by thinking of windows as well as doors but I have heard or read (???) that the camera lens is a window to the human experience and the eyes are windows to the soul. I have pondered the possibilities of a camera lens and eyes (eye) in a photo and made this photo.
I opened the back af a 1914 era Kodak autographic, aimed it at the eye of one of my wifes dolls. I then took a picture from its film side and through it's lens using a Kiev 60 with an 80mm lens and 75mm extension. I'm not sure what I expected but here's (http://www.apug.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=29614&nocache=1) my photo of "portals". copake_ham 11-12-2007, 11:59 PM Oh boy, time to be the curmudgeon again.
In the past MSA posts were put in the MSA Gallery.
Now they just show up in thread - becomes some kind of "horse race" or one-upsmanship game this way to see who can "out-post" in the thread.
Just what happened the last time.
I know, permitting "entries" in the thread give a chance for Members to participate who, not being Subscribers, cannot post to the MSA Gallery.
My feeling on that is "too bad". But I'll just go away because I find this "thread approach" with postings only 12 days into a 61 day period to be too "in your face". I haven't been a member long enough to know what usually does or doesn't happen, but as the "victim" who has to judge the entries this time, I would certainly find it easier if everything is in one space. I had assumed, they would all be in the gallery, but they are not showing up there. Can they be moved? Sly |
