Dear APUG Colleagues

I am a member of an Arts League here in East North Carolina. I've displayed much of my work at the Arts League Gallery. I am the only photographer in the group that does "traditional" film photography. They have asked me to lead a Traditional Photography Workshop. It will be only one evening approximately 2-3 hours in length.

The audience will consist of a broad range of ages (from teenagers to seniors). Some of them are artists of various mediums (e.g. sculpture, paint, mixed media, digital photographers etc...). I clearly want to discuss the virtues of film photography; however, I am not interested in getting bogged down into an analogue vs. digital exercise.

I would appreciate it if some of you could provide me with some ideas for topics that I should discuss at this workshop. It is going to be held in mid-May (right after the digital photography workshop). I am especially interested in those of you who have lead workshops. I would also appreciate any materials that you could share (e.g. power point slides etc.)

I appreciate any suggestions that anyone could provide.

Thanks,

Ed Sanford

Hi Ed,

I've got the same 'problem' coming up at the New England Camera Club Council annual conference in July 2008. Similar length of time and audience.

Here's what I have - tentative plans:

My title is "Film is alive and thriving in a digital world."
A PowerPoint presentation will be the primary vehicle.
I plan on covering (overview only not demos or anything like that):

Types of film cameras available - 35, MF, LF, toy cameras, instant cameras, pinholes
What film is available from Kodak, Ilford and Fuji
Typical printing options - wet B&W darkroom, local labs & scanning for digital
Historical and alternative processes - overviews only
Resources on and off the web - APUG is going to be prominent, as well as ToyCamera, f295 and AlternativePhotography - as well as stores like Freestyle, KEH, etc... local labs, Wal-Mart, etc...
Fun stuff to do with film - Traveling Camera, Print Exchanges, Shoot One Roll Scavenger Hunts, etc...I'm planning on bringing examples of cameras and different types of prints.

Also planning on giving away rolls of a major yellow brand. Still in the works, but close to closing the deal. Also going to solicit giveaway door prizes from several film friendly suppliers.

My presentation is focusing on the fun aspects of film and getting people to do more film based photography, even for things that are normally 'digital' today. The idea is to get them into film or back into film by showing the range of things they can do and make it easy (relative) for them to shoot film by showing them where/how to get materials, processing and advice.

I will have three sessions over the 3 day conference - most likely one on Friday and two on Saturday. Attendance at the last year's conference was HUGE (several hundred) and this is the first 'focus on film' session they are going to have.

Regards, Art.

Art,

Thanks,

As you "flesh out" your presentation, I would appreciate your sharing more specifics... I will do the same for you.

Is this the HUGE event you mentioned... I dunno... couple of months ago, Art?

Sounds good, btw. I recently presented my work to the Boston Camera Club. As I was showing some big 20"x24" prints, I answered the inevitable... do you ever shoot digitally? I explained why I prefer film, but I think the prints spoke volumes!! Let us know when this will happen, Art. I'd love to see your presentation!
