Been looking at Sudek's work online, wanted to get a book, wondering which people reccomend. I especially like his garden photos and dark still lifes, fwiw. Thanks,

Josef Sudek - Poet of Prague is the only one of his that I have.

Poet or Prague is a great start.

There are some wonderful books of his found on the European eBay if you don't mind no English editions.

I just received a book of Sudek's pigment prints bought through the LF forum.

I have three books on Sudek, and I am waiting for two more to come.(the pigment prints, that Ole mentioned and "the poet of Prague")

the three ones are named:
Sudek - Josef Sudek and finally Sudek!....:rolleyes:

one is by Sonja Bullaty (very good! great prints in this one)

"Josef Sudek" by Zdenek kirschner (good one too, but the print quality is not as good as in the two other books)

"Josef Sudek" by Anna Favrova (FANTASTIC! big one! lots and lots of prints in really good quality. not cheap, though....)

So I'll have 5 in a little time. I like to have so many with this fantastic Photographer, as each book has prints, not showing in other books...

...and he is my favourite!

Pigments Prints is my favorite.

Certainly get "Poet of Prague". I think it is the best monograph/biography book on Sudek. Luminous & magical.

sudek is also a favorite of mine -- his fascination with earlier photographic techniques and visual sensibilities should qualify him as the patron saint of apug ..... one book that i really like is 'el silenci de les coses: josef sudek' (1998)..... it contains a range of his work done since 1940 (still lifes, garden series, panoramas, interiors of his deranged 'studio') ..... it has beautiful reproductions and an english translation of the text in the back, along with some of his quotes made over the years in different interviews ..... such as: "i have always only photographed what interested me, what made me love it" ..... i don't remember where i found it; possibly on ebay .... good hunting-- you can never have too many of his books!

and it turns out, that the pigment print book isn't the one mentioned above..

it is smaller, and it predates this one.
it is in french...
but it certainly cost me a lot of money!!:rolleyes:

I have Prague Panoramic published by Odeon on '92. I've always loved this book. It seems the essence of that city to me.

I noticed it on ebay... waited and waited - the buy now price was 250$...
bought it, because in some (many) cases I am just plain stupid......:(

however, I am quite good at forgetting the price once I have it. and the book is still beautiful.

I have the Phaidon 55 [ed Ian Jeffery], which is a nice intro to Sudek's work, pocketable and not expensive [a lady IIRC].

The Phaidon 55 is more of an intro to Sudek, not his work. Comparing the P55 to "Pigment Prints" shows that very clearly.

Not that the P55 is bad; just that the others are so incredibly much better!
