so, what brought this up.. i do NOT like seafood. yet tonight i went out to dinner with a bunch of friends at a local seafood restaurant they all like. sometimes you just have to go with the flow. luckily, they had some decent non-seafood dishes. which is rare at a seafood place. but i digress..

now they are all wanting to hit lake tahoe to go skiing/snowboarding in a couple weeks. but guess what, i do NOT do snow sports. but...... it may be a good chance for me to go out shooting.

now i'm contemplating taking my shen-hao 4x5 and changing bag and a heavy coat and tagging along.. and my crown graphic, you know for the "point and shoot" moments.

can someone recommend some interesting places to check out around lake tahoe for a non-skiier? a short day trip might be ok. nothing too far, we will just be there for a weekend.

Bodie is within striking distance of Tahoe. Although the road up to it may be closed due to snow. Lundy Canyon is also worth a peek, just down 395 on the opposite side from Bodie.

Your problem will be getting around. Look at www.dot.ca.gov for current road conditions and you'll note a lot of winter closures as well as stretches where chains , snow tyres or 4wd or some combination are required. Your type of car will be a lot more important than your type of camera. I doubt you'll get to Bodie. The road's normally blocked all winter and I couldn't even get there in late April a couple of years back.

i have a feeling i won't get far from the lake. i thought about bodie/mono, but those are quite a ways out relatively speaking, so that may be for another time. thanks for the pointers.

sounds like we now have lodging for south lake tahoe and i have permission to drive a friend's new all wheel drive car. :)
i doubt i'll get far from the lake but it will at least be nice to be mobile. i would love to bring my 8x10 so i can use some of my older lenses, but space in the car may be a problem. i'll at least have my 4x5, film, changing tent, and tripod.
