View Full Version : Sloss Furnaces, Birmingham glbeas 03-08-2008, 11:12 AM My wife and I have been discussing returning to the Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham next Saturday, the 15th, to try and improve on our last venture there. Anybody interested in making it a group venture? A stop at the Golden Rule barbeque house in not out of the question. rkmiec 03-09-2008, 12:06 PM when you go,what cameras do you take,do they allow tripods and can you wander freely.looks interesting. glbeas 03-09-2008, 02:14 PM Yes they do allow self guided tours and common sense use of tripods and cameras. It looks like they will be having an iron and bronze casting class that day too so there may be some interesting sights if we are allowed to peer over thier shoulders.

Gary, I'd like to go! Let me know any details! glbeas 03-10-2008, 06:03 PM My wife just informed me that my grandbabies birthday party had been changed to Saturday so the trip to Sloss will have to be on Sunday. That can work for me. Anyone else going? You leaving Sunday a.m., or going over Saturday night?
Hope some other people decide to go if they read this. From what I understand, this is an interesting place to photograph. glbeas 03-11-2008, 05:33 PM That can work for me. Anyone else going? You leaving Sunday a.m., or going over Saturday night?

Haven't made the decide yet. It might be Saturday night as we'll be 70 miles closer to B'ham while at my sons place in Carrollton. rkmiec 03-11-2008, 07:31 PM gary do you sign the photographic release when you go,what do you say is the purpose and do they charge you as an artist.seems as a tourist you can shoot for free and even as an independent but they may want compensation if an image is to be sold? glbeas 03-11-2008, 07:42 PM Really don't know anything about that, never stopped in the office to see about it. I just walked in and shot pictures. JeffD 03-11-2008, 10:16 PM I'll put "tourist" on the form. If they look at my past work, they'd never believe "artist"! ScottH 03-13-2008, 11:33 AM If we're talking about Sunday the 16th I may be able to make it. Gary, what's the drive time from our neck of the woods? Any particular time we'd plan to meet up? glbeas 03-13-2008, 03:36 PM I'd say its about a three hour trip. I'm beginning to think with the gas prices going up it will be a good idea to carpool out there. As far as leave time the earlier the better. We need a consensus on the exact time. markbb 03-13-2008, 05:21 PM Sloss furnaces in Birmingham? f I get a train to New Street, where would I go from there? rkmiec 03-13-2008, 05:25 PM the closest airport and book a flight to alabama in the u.s.,shouldnt be to much money with the declining dollar.... :) markbb 03-13-2008, 05:30 PM Ah, I see. This is the smaller Birmingham in the USA.
I'd love to come over, but I think I will wait until I will be treated as a guest, not a criminal.
I hope you guys have fun. rkmiec 03-13-2008, 05:54 PM ok gary i am officially in.i am in athens ga so i will need to know what time to meet you guys if we will carpool,if needed i can drive myself and another in my truck,i would prefer to carpool with someone as my truck is a hog.also is it better to take ga 140/holcomb bridge rd to roswell (from I-85)or take the exit from 285 to the roswell area???i will need an hour to get there so give me an exact time to arrive and a pm of your address if we are meeting there.thanks for organizing this. glbeas 03-13-2008, 07:03 PM Ah, I see. Yes much smaller and not near as old. I'd love to go see your Birmingham.
If you manage to get over here you can be my guest. glbeas 03-13-2008, 07:04 PM A little research tells me that Sloss does not open till noon on Sunday so make your plans accordingly. If you want we can try meeting at the Golden Rule barbeque at the Irondale exit a little before noon for lunch, it's good stuff. Looks like my wife and I might be in Carrollton Saturday night and will leave from there rather than loop to Roswell and back another 140 miles. glbeas 03-15-2008, 10:04 AM We'll be leaving soon for Carrollton, call my cell if you have any updates. Golden Rule is here: http://www.goldenrulebbq.com/locations/irondale/ glbeas 03-15-2008, 11:23 AM We'll try to be at the Golden Rule by 11-11:30 Alabama time. I don't think they'll be open much sooner than that. glbeas 03-16-2008, 08:33 PM Rick made it in from Athens to join us and we had a great time shooting. We had a treat, the artists were casting iron and we were allowed to watch and shoot all we wanted of the glowing iron, sparks and leather clad ironworkers. The weather was so beautiful, wish all you who missed out could have been there. rkmiec 03-16-2008, 08:48 PM the day was awesome,it really is to bad no one else made it.this was my first time their and the metal pour was the best.i have to go there again.
thanks for the invite gary,i enjoyed shooting with you two. JeffD 03-16-2008, 10:30 PM Yep, stuff happens, sorry I missed out. post something for us to see.... rkmiec 03-16-2008, 11:16 PM here is a pic from the iron pour.it is a digi that is why i linked it instead of posting.it is only a 2 meg camera phone and slightly cropped but you can see the heat mirage,it was very cool.
