I'll be in seattle next week. Any suggestions on landscape opportunites within a 1 hour drive of the city? I'm looking for hopefully rugged ocean shoreline if possible... I'll be staying in the Unv. of Wash. area.
Thanks for any suggestions!

gphoto120,
Actual rugged ocean shoreline is about 2 hrs. + away on the Olympic Peninsula (see Kalaloch on the map, for example). However, there is a lot of Puget Sound shoreline available within an hour. You can take ferries to Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, and Whidbey Island within that timespan. Whidbey might just be the ticket, as it has much to offer in the way of shoreline and general rustic beauty. It also has an old WWII lookout fort ( Fort Casey), which has interesting concrete bunkers along the beach front.
PM me if you'd like more info.

There's some decent coastline north of Seattle on the way to Bellingham at the south end of Chuckanut Drive. Otherwise I'd agree with Rob that you need to go either to the Pacific Coast or to one of the islands.

Agree with the others about time needed to get to Pacific Coast. At far north end of Whidbey is Deception Pass & Dec Pass state park which I would characterize as rugged. At south end of bridge walk down to shoreline along trail and to the west along the trail for views back to bridge. At the park walk on trail south of restroom building, very unique tree that you can't miss.
