First major retrospective of Brett Weston's work in over thirty years. Debuts in Oklahoma City through the 18th of May. I highly recommend this exhibition of original Weston silver gelatin prints to everyone.

It will be in The Phillips Collection, Washington DC, between June and Sept and then it goes on national tour.

Wow! Really wish this had been posted sooner. :( It's been there (OKC) a month and a half already and now I only have a couple more weekends to try and get there!

I emailed the Brett Weston Archive. Hopefully they will have a list of tour dates established. Patiently waiting.

When I go to see it at the Phillips I will certainly inquire about all the subsequent venues. Since the Phillips was an organizer I'm sure they can tell me something. (I suspect that they haven't yet arranged all of the venues for the tour; hence the silence.)

There is a book. $25! Not a bad price for such a thing at all. Paperback, 136 images and enough text for those that read, too. ;) I would contact either of the two museum shops by mail or phone. Surely they'll ship you one.

I drove up (from Dallas) on Saturday to see this show. It is staggering to see this much work in one place - especially when the wekend before I had traveled to Tucson to see the Group f64 exhibition at the Center for Creative Photography. Over 200 vintage prints in successive Saturdays. Well, I'm pretty charged up now!

The Group f64 show was interesting and enlightening. Almost an equal number of prints from the f64 folks, and from Mortenson and his school. The whole idea was to contrast the two styles. I had planned for weeks to make a trip out there - I love Tucson anyway - and see the show and do a little photography of my own. It was a little harder to photograph after seeing the show. I was very inspired, but also very aware of my limitations. :o

It was (ironically) while I was in Tucson that I learned of the Brett Weston show in OKC. It had been there since mid-March, and I could have gotten up there almost any weekend (easy 3 hour drive). I like all of the f64 folks, but Brett may well be my favorite, so I had to go.

A wonderful experience to say the least! I certainly have a goal to strive for. I learned a few things in the two Saturdays about "vision" and composition, and about printing. And maybe about exposure. Someone has said that "focus is overrated". Well, I'm beginning to think that maybe shadow detail is overrated. I'm not advocating underexposure, but Brett (and some of the others) didn't seem to be afraid of black!
