High up on my list of places to see/shoot is Coney Island and I've heard a rumour that the park is threatened with demolition, is this true? Any local APUGers can confirm?

Here's a link to a USA Today article: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/2007-06-04-astroland-final-summer_n.htm

Looks like Astroland is closing after the summer.

Gotta love them developers. Sounds like it will be going from character to crap. Too bad. I will be crossing it off my life list.

Those of you in the area, take lots of photos, including color, for those of us who will never see it.

That article is last year's news. For summer 2008, Coney Island remains as it was. The developer and the city are still at loggerheads as to how things will proceed. See this article from the NY Times on April 17th. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/17/nyregion/17coney.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=coney%20island&st=cse&oref=slogin. Don't be surprised if it soldiers on another year or two.

the same thing happened to rocky point park in warwick ri.
it was an oldie and a goodie, with a lot of rich history.
it closed down for a number of years ( in the 90s )
and then kids/vandals with no connection to the park
(they never went there when it was a working amusement park)
lit fires, and trashed the place.

i was lucky enough to get in a year+ ago and photograph
the surreal, quiet, abandoned, sad place. a few months later
it burned again ...

unfortunately, abandoned amusement parks are a liability,
and often a GIANT parcel of land near a waterfront
so it is prime property ...

oh well ...

I believe the Glaswegian term is "went on fire"
