View Full Version : Urban Night Photo Workshop with JD Callow Bob Carnie 06-09-2008, 05:06 PM JD Callow is going to be giving an Urban Night Photography Workshop in Toronto from July 17 - 20th. The workshop will be held in the evenings on Thursday and Friday, all day Saturday and Sunday (Sunday's evening shoot is optional). The course includes lectures, reviews, a colour darkroom demonstration and about 12 hours of shooting. All those who come will get Jason Brunner's handy little exposure book, film processing, contacts and 3 8x10's, fed on Sunday and transportation costs covered when shooting in the city. Work form this workshop will be going into our show and benefit auction in Oct along with work from les's workshop and the big workshop in October.
John is an urban gorilla photographer and a damn good colour printer. If you want to learn how to shoot at night in the city this is where you'll learn. The workshop page is here http://elevatorworkshops.com/night.shtml and we have a pdf here: http://elevatorworkshops.com/pdf/julyflier.pdf
Later in the week or next week we'll have fliers available to anyone within a 100miles or so who wouldn't mind circulating a few to their camera clubs, schools, camera shops... Dinesh 06-09-2008, 06:43 PM As someone who has gone on a shoot with JD, I can tell you that his knowledge on night photography is truly amazing. Zebra 06-10-2008, 06:25 PM Having been bound, gagged, drugged and basically kidnapped by Dinesh, (what else could explain finding myself in his living room, I refuse to accept that my judgement is that poor) I can attest to having seen JD's incredible work firsthand. His color prints make me want to be able to shoot color THAT WAY! They are incredible. Scenes i would walk by every day for a thousand years and not see a picture are turned into destinations of the mind that I want to visit physically. He puts you there, I can only imagine actually getting to be there shooting with him.
Disclosure: JD prints really big which probably is suggestive of a compensation issue from some physical deformity but since I shoot a 20 x 24 camera I can hardly cast stones. So even though I don't know him personally I can probably just chalk up my love of his work as a kindred spirit thing! Essential for cross processing. Krockmitaine 06-11-2008, 08:22 AM Would just love to be there, having done night photography years ago, but just can't this year.
Please, make another this a yearly event! :) jd callow 06-11-2008, 12:16 PM Dinesh, Monty thanks for the kind words. Yep I like big prints, but I drove a small truck. Excessive drinking will not be tolarated. All slobering drunks will be used as props in the 'how to humilate the annoying' segment of the workshop. Although, an adult beverage might be good to lubricate the creative mechanisms...
Krokmitaine, That would be up to Bob. gr82bart 06-11-2008, 04:54 PM JD's x-processing work is really fantastic. Besides Bob's workshops, I've recommended him to the f295 Symposium organizers too.
Regards, Art. Bob Carnie 06-20-2008, 01:45 PM Hey guys we have fliers printed for the Callow and October workshops and could realy use some help with distribution. If you need fliers or can help distribute them let me know and I'll see that you get some. Or if you're in the area, stop by and pick some up.
If you want a crash course on how to shoot in the city at night take Callow's class. Fintan 06-20-2008, 02:48 PM I'm so jealous of ye guys going on this. Ol' PeachButt would be my favourite color photographer. If I win the state lottery tomorrow night, I'll be there. jd callow 06-20-2008, 02:52 PM Thanks Fintan. I plan on coming your way as soon as I can. Hopefully we can hang out and shoot some stuff. GeoffHill 06-20-2008, 03:19 PM I'd love to go to this, but Its probably a little too far for a few evenings photography Dinesh 06-20-2008, 03:31 PM Is excessive drinking required or optional?

It is too far for a workshop, but I appreciate the sentiment. GeoffHill 06-20-2008, 04:25 PM It is too far for a workshop, but I appreciate the sentiment.
It's convinced me to load up a roll of original (07 expired) Velvia 50 and go out and shoot tho Zebra 06-28-2008, 07:28 PM I find it hard to believe that I AM THE ONLY ONE THAT USES THE RELFECTOR VEST WHEN CROSSING THE STREET!

Yes -- another 3 or 4 would be perfect.
Dinesh,
Has Toronto Police lifted your curfew?
I believe one of his kids is now wearing the teather. Yes -- another 3 or 4 would be perfect.
Two weeks to early for me to be able to join you unfortunately, but save some of the good spots for me!
Good luck with it!
