View Full Version : Hermagis No. 4 extra rapide 3.5

I just bought this lens, I still have to get my hands on it

it was made by Hermagis Paris, it's an "Extra Rapide" no.4

it should be a portrait lens (petzval?)

it has a diaphgram iris with aperture range from 3.5 to 20

the barrel diameter is about 9 cm and about 20 cm tall

it comes with a mounting flange and a hood (about 10 cm diameter)

I didn't find any information on this lens on the web... how old do you think it is and which image circle do you think it covers?

I will probably answer the latter question myself once I have the lens here, but I would still like to know more about the lens, I'm not an expert, but was looking for a very old portrait lens... I hope it will cover the 5x7 format and hopefully full plate or 8x10

Better post a photograph of it when you get it, might get you more responses.

the focal length is likely to be around 300mm, meaning that it covers 4x5" SHARP. Or 8x10" with lots of swirl...

Hermagis was a French maker of optics
from about 1860 to about 1935, according
to the Vade Mecum. I have a Hermagis
"Objectif pour Portrait N. 6" -- it is the lens
you see in my avatar. The name of your
lens suggests a rapid rectilinear design, of
which Hermagis made many. But the
apertures you mention are the same as
the ones on my Portrait N. 6, and the f/3
maximum seems too wide for a RR design.

The Vade Mecum entry for Hermagis is
sketchy at best. As you have found, there
is very little information about the Hermagis
line on the Internet, but it appears that in its
day Hermagis was a leading maker of optics
in Europe.
