Before I get beaten with a sharp stick about the topic, let me explain....

I'm just looking for a quick duffers guide from an Elements 6 user on how to resize photos for the APUG gallery. I previously had an elderly Mac and ancient version of Elements which did the job nicely until my Mac died and went Mac went to Mac heaven (not helped by spilling a pint glass of water into the HD. Ahem). Replaced it with a new IMac and an updated version of Elements, but, for the life of me, I can't work out how to resize to APUG gallery proportions  A step-by-step duffers guide would be much appreciated...!

And I promise, no more digit*l posts...!

Cheers,
Gavin

As in 'read the f'ing manual'?

Gee, I wonder why APUG sometimes gets the name of being unfriendly...?

Surely it won't be all that different to how it was done in previous versions? In all image editing programs there is, somewhere, a resize/image size option. Just select pixels as the unit of size, make it 800 on the long side then 'save for web'.

There is a resize image option under, I believe, the "image" menu. I usually make a copy of the scan, resize it to about 600 pixels on the longest side, at 72ppi.

If I'm wrong about that... there is a resize option in one of the drop down menus along the top. Good luck... looking forward to seeing your pix! Wish I could be more helpful.

Well for people who can't be bothered to help themselves and yet expect other people to do it for them, what do you expect. I don't have elements but I'm prepared to bet that hitting the help button and putting resize in the index or search function would tell you exactly how to do what you want. Is that really too much trouble for you?

Rob, here's an idea, how about saving the rudeness for Pnet instead of going out of your way to put people off from asking questions?

Do yourself a favour and get IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com). It's so simple that if you can't use that without asking questions or reading the manual, you shouldn't be allowed near a computer.

We're not really tech support, we're an analog photography forum...

Hmmm...Irfanview - PC only. I think the OP has a iMac.

Hmmm.

Gavin,
I don't use Elements, but if its anything like photoshop try the following:
From one of the top menu choices (probably 'Image') find and select a function called 'image size', 'size' or 'resize'

Resize the image as desired, but keep the absolute width and height below the gallery's max (600 or 800 pixels?). As Andy dtated the units may be in inch or CM which means you'll want to change these to pixels or do the math.

If you're given options for how to resize bicubic or bicubic with sharpening is best for size reductions.

Thanks for answering my question.

Hope any newbies aren't put off by some of the ill-tempered answers I got.

Cheers,

Gavin, I don't know if it is the same, but in Elements 5 you go Editor > Image > Resize (from the dropdown) > Image size from the flyout and then put in your preferred number of pixels before saving for web. HTH, Peter

Indeed. It was a legitimate question, and deserving of a respectful answer.

When resizing pictures in Elements 6, the 'Resample' dialogue box needs checked, otherwise you can't change the pixel dimensions.

Phew, back to normal service...!

And thanks, Peter and Banana (!)...

Before I get beaten with a sharp stick about the topic, let me explain....:p When I saw the thread title, I thought there would be body parts as I entered the thread! Glad to see you are still intact Gavin.

Though I have to say, I am quite perplexed about the reaction from the mods. People who come here to sincerely ask about film scanners (to get their files into a digital format so they could use a photo editing software to properly prepare their images in order to get their images into the APUG gallery), quickly get shut down and pushed off to another site.

None the less, I'm glad to see a more open attitude. It's a step in right direction. :D

Gee, I wonder why APUG sometimes gets the name of being unfriendly...?It does unfortunately have that reputation. I have heard this over and over again from many traditional film photographers who have been here once and never again. It's too bad there are a few here who relish in that reputation.

I think there should be a FAQ regarding scanners, scanning, resizing and simple tasks that are needed to get an analog photograph on APUG.
I agree with both sides though:
1) Opening discussions on digital photography (of any kind) opens a can of worms
2) It seems unfriendly and impolite not to answer simple and common questions like that
So, there needs to be a solution that keeps the character of APUG intact yet can satisfy beginners who are most likely to be offended and displeased.
Pointing to a FAQ regarding those matters I think is more diplomatic than pointing to another site altogether.

As far as those photographers who left APUG is concerned, this is mostly due to personal reasons, not the general APUG attitude. People will have disagreements on business practices, politics, religion and personal affairs that will drive them away. I almost left APUG because of personal attacks that were irrelevant to analog photography or the community. I also miss friends that I met here in APUG that left for one reason or another.
APUG is one of the friendliest forums around and I've been to a few.

If they asked how to scan a finished print for the APUG gallery I think there would be less objection. A scanned negative is not (IMO) a finished work.

It is for me - I shoot dr5 reverse-procesed b+w transparencies, so this is my finished work. Just like colour transparency work, this means using ND Grads etc to get the exposure 'right' in camera.

And thanks for your help when I got my ear bent for asking my original question about Elements...!

Cheers,
Gavin

The problem with this post is that it's unnecessary. If YOU don't want to answer a question, YOU don't have to, but a gratuitous "RTFM", without imparting any other guidance is just provocative and combative. And that's just what makes forums a drag. As you can see from the subsequent posts, lots of people are willing to do the neighborly thing and respond with simple, easy to understand guidance.

One can always hit their back button if they're irked by a question without being unkind.

A scanned negative is not (IMO) a finished work.Andy,

This is a B&W bias. Another reason why there not many colour photographers who shoot slides and transparencies (like me and many others) here on APUG.

I don't consider slides to be negatives, of course a slide (or positive transparency) is a finished item.
