Has anyone found a replacement for the old Kodak Red Opaque? I used to use it when I worked for a printshop (I did prepress) 20 years ago.

I have several at the studio, I'll look who makes it when I'm there tomorrow. Works like a champ, less than $10 and comes with an extra nib as well. jim appleyard 08-25-2008, 07:05 AM There is, but I don't remember the name. I think that topic came up on photo.net. Try there. cmacd123 08-25-2008, 08:46 PM Try the folks that supply your local printers. I am sure thay probaly carry "something" perhaps with their house brand on it. Photo Engineer 08-25-2008, 08:49 PM I believe that the Formulary sells the original opaque using their formulation. You might try calling them. PE isaacc7 08-25-2008, 11:33 PM Didn't Avedon use lipstick for getting those backgrounds really white? Isaac richard ide 08-25-2008, 11:58 PM A good quality water colour paint like Winsor Newton's will do the same job. Red Ochre is the best colour. One thing: dilute it well as the paint has glycerine in it and will not dry well on film if it is too thick. rtuttle 08-27-2008, 09:05 AM In the graphic arts there used to be "perfex" opaque. Try looking that up online, they probably made Kodaks anyway. Akki14 08-27-2008, 10:54 AM I was browsing an art catalogue a few weeks ago and found Winsor & Newton do their own photographic opaque under Designers Gouache -> Graphic Whites & Blacks. I've not tried it yet, though. http://www.winsornewton.com/products/gouache/designers-gouache/graphic-whites--blacks/ Stephen Frizza 08-27-2008, 02:08 PM a company called Windsor and newton make photographic opaque. it is sold in australia. it is a good alternative to Kodaks. |
