View Full Version : Flim splitter ideas? John Kasaian 08-28-2008, 04:33 PM I ordered some double run 8mm Foma to shoot in my Dad's old Kodak movie camera. I found a lab that can process it but they can't split it, so I was wondering if there are any on-line sources for plans to build a film splitter? Any ideas thoughts or suggestions? Thanks. David A. Goldfarb 08-28-2008, 05:40 PM You might ask at www.filmshooting.com, which deals with small gauge film making.
You might try http://www.yalefilmandvideo.com/ to see if they'll process and split it. I have an 8mm slitter around here somewhere. It is a very simple device. Let me find it and post some pictures. ic-racer 08-28-2008, 07:22 PM http://www.prepfilm.com/ will process it and split it and splice it together. jnanian 08-28-2008, 07:24 PM hijohn
send your film to be processed through walmart
( just mark the special instructions on the bag " 8mm movie film" )
you can also have it processed through prep film labs in MI.
walmart sends it out ( and it costs like 4$ to process double run 8mm )
prep film also sell film for your camera as well.
have fun!
john srs5694 08-28-2008, 07:28 PM You can find some information on home-made film splitters at the Sub Club. (http://www.subclub.org/darkroom/splitter.htm) This site is dedicated to subminiature still photography, but the basic principles of the splitter ought to work for your application, too. If anything, you'd have it easier, since if I understand correctly, you've got processed film, so you don't need to worry about doing it all in total darkness. ic-racer 08-28-2008, 07:31 PM hijohn

That Wallmart service is for Kodachrome only, not B&W reversal (Foma). Prep Film does not sell B&W reversal R8mm, they only process it. jnanian 08-28-2008, 07:37 PM That Wallmart service is for Kodachrome only, not B&W reversal (Foma). Do you still have your camera? You should try some B&W while it is still feasible :) I can't find the damned thing...:( CRhymer 08-30-2008, 08:59 PM I think this is what you want. I got one from J&C a few years ago, and a second one in a Lomo tank from the UK. Some former Soviet bloc sellers of Lomo tanks and Krasnogorsk movie cameras, etc. have them on offer from time to time. As it so happens, I saw two for sale on eBay a week or two ago for about 9-15 USD, IIRC. I can't find the listings now, but they come up from time to time.
One threads the film into the 16mm slot in the drum and pulls it out the other end - very smooth, very fast, and very even.
Kino, don't feel bad. It took me a while to find mine just now. You wouldn't believe the other lost things I found looking for my slitter.
Cheers,
Clarence ben-s 08-30-2008, 09:06 PM There's a plan for a D8 slitter here: http://lavender.fortunecity.com/lavender/569/slitter.html
SubClub have a nicer design with half-decent pictures here:http://www.subclub.org/darkroom/splitter.htm
There's another one here: http://www.kcbx.net/~mhd/2photo/slitter/build.htm
And here: http://www.hektor.worldonline.co.uk/minox1/slitter.html
Clarence's unit looks much better though. CRhymer 08-30-2008, 09:14 PM It is the only one I have used, so I can't say, but it works like a charm. Here is another link.
