I am using a photo business program that was originally designed for a Mac and ported to Windows with the usual problems and the usual complaints from Windows users. The software developer contends that, while 90% of computers use Windows, 90% of photographers use Macs. (His figures).

I wonder what operating system is most used by us?

Here are some stats of browser/OS activity on APUG. I wouldn't say Macs are at 90%. Maybe he means digital photographers? seems like they would use macs more.

That's very interesting, Sean. I'm surprised by the number of NT users - that wouldn't indicate many people log on from work would it? No, that couldn't be. Ha.

Windows NT 5.0 would be Windows 2000. The 5.1 might be XP. I have Windows 2000 on my PC, but I use Safari on my iBook for most of my web browsing.

Until last year I completely stayed away from computers. My assistant at the time talked me into setting up a web site and convinced me Mac was the easiest way to go. Well she's moved on and I'm way over my head! Computers are expensive, unpredictable and require synapses I was not born with. However the information at my finger tips is amazing and almost justifies the frustration.

I had to enter "other" for Mac/Win split.

Right now I'm using WinXP, a pretty good, stable OS and a tremendous relief after agonizing experiences with Win98 and WinME. Win3.1 and Win95 weren't bad because they didn't overreach themselves.

Personally, I wish Macs had become the default standard for personal computers but I was forced to leave them behind with the 68xxx series and OS 7.x.

I've become so tired of fixing other people's PCs and hosed OS's I've begun to just fib and claim "I dunno what's wrong with it."

CP/M! I still have an 8-inch floppy somewhere in my files for nostalgia's sake from the--what was it? Xerox 820 or something like that? I can't remember whether the files on it are Wordstar or Peachtext. Eventually I switched over to a PC Jr., I think, and meanwhile, I knew a physics professor who used a cutting edge Victor that had double-sided 5.25" floppies and some kind of compression software so that they held more than 640K, if I remember correctly.

And I remember the title of the Byte magazine article at the time - "Victor Victorious"

What about CP/M 2.0 on a Commodore 128? Which box do I click? Hard to believe that was a dual processor machine...

Back in the old days I used a CP/M machine called a Hardy 801. Used 8 inch floppy. I think the only programs we used that weren't home grown was VisiCalc and WordStar. Dual drive machine, no hard drive, 1 floppy drive for the program and one for your data. Bleeding edge stuff back then!!

After total nightmares with win98 I was reluctant to go to XP, but have been very pleased with XP so far. I found with 98 the more you installed the slower it got, and more unstable it got. Although XP is better, I'm starting to find my install running a bit sluggish lately. I am probably due for a fresh re-build to clean things up and regain some performance. I have tinkered with Linux and like how it's evolving, but it's just not there yet as a fully functional desktop (lacks many apps, gaming, etc). OSX is awesome and it's tragic that Microsoft was clever enough to beat them out of the global desktop market. I'd much rather see the world using OSX than XP, but oh well...

Linux for work and wherever I can get away with it, and windows at home. However, I scavenged a Mac, put OSX on it, and am getting rather attached. I'm just trying to avoid slipping into the Apple reality-distortion field, and ending up as another "I love my Mac" zealot.

CP/M? Become a Real Man, and upgrade to VAX/VMS. I want Photoshop for VAX so that I can make lineprinter art again.

I used to do my email on a VAX/VMS machine. I would dial in with Kermit, which was a great piece of software--handled any language, any protocol, any OS, it seemed.

When my sister was studying animation at RISD she used to run a 3-D graphics program called "WaveFront" in AIX on two RISC stations that IBM donated to the school.

I gave my vote for Linux because it's my favorite. PocketLinux is really cool and has some interesting possibilities. I've also tried freeBSD. My "main" machine is Windows 2000. I also have an ancient Mac that someone gave me.
