I have an SB-28 and a PC-cable that I use with all my cameras on a flash bracket. The thing is the flash doesn't trip half the time, and I have yet to diagnose why. I do not have a manual for this flash, but it seems to go into standby and then not work, or then even sometimes it doesn't work right after being turned on. I have suspected the cord, but I have tried shorting out the PC terminal and sometimes it's just dead. I'm wondering if there's some way to put the flash on "off-camera, PC sync mode" so that it will not go into standby or something. It's really annoying.

Here's a link that comes to mind:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=nikon+sb-28+instructions
Once there, it will be easy to find the desired information.
If you're still unsure how to proceed, here's some more help:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/NikonF5/SB28Manual/index1.htm
- use the "Find" function in your browser, and search for "Canceling and setting the standby function" on that particular page.

PC cables can be bad intermittently. I'd try a new or different cord. If that cord proves to be bad, cut it half so no one else has trouble with it.
