My wife and I will be traveling to Montreal Québec in late August and we are looking for a centrally located, inexpensive place to stay. This is not a request for some kind Québec resident to offer up their home to us. We are just hoping to circumvent the rather inflated prices of the known brands, and our ignorance of the area.

Last year when traveling to Greenwich, UK, we paid about 75 quid a night for a basic non descript hotel on the outskirts of town. Everyday as we walked to the downtown district we would pass signs for rooms as low as 10 queens per night. Our requirements are not high and had we a local contact in Greenwich I’m sure we could have benefited.

Does anyone have knowledge of inexpensive rooms for rent (Hotel, Motel or other) or B&B’s that are either located near the city center or public transportation?

I would also be interested in any interesting locations for street and architectural photography.

If you don't mind traveling a little each day, you could stay in the US . About 50 miles south of the city of Montreal is Plattsburgh, NY. If you were to take route 9 south to a place called Keesville, NY you will find some small Mom and Pop motels. When I worked in the Plattsburgh area a few years ago, I stayed in an efficiency; bed room small kitchen and a bathroom. $100 per seven day week in the off season. the season doesn't start until June.

we will be taking the train from Toronto and won't have wheels. We will need to be in the city proper or at least within the reach of the public transportation.

the last time i went to montreal i stayed in a days inn. it was the cheapest place i could find. it was nearby to the city and public transit.
i was quite poor, and pleasantly surprised when my credit card bill came. :)

Hi mrcallow. I used to visit Montreal every few months for courses and I stayed just outside of the city in Point Claire at the Quality Suites Hotel. It's located close to the Airport and 5 minutes from the train station (Dorval) right at Boulevard St. Jean and Autoroute Transcanadienne (or St.Jean Blvd., and the Trans Canada Highway). I have a good friend that lives right in Montreal as well. I'll email him and find out what he can recommend for the downtown area. That way you could just walk everywhere.

It is located on the main street. An easy walk to the old city, chinatown, and the art museums. They have parking behind the hotel. I don't remember what it cost, but it was reasonable.
