I love dog photography, and a young lady I follow is a Master. She happens to be a Vet as well. Just good Peeps.
She just shared with me that she is incorporating Film into her work.
I'm pumped!

I was prepared for the worst, but William Wegman she is not.

Yes, I know wegman but won't follow him as I can never see where he gives anything back. It's a personal thing of mine.

Just curious, what do you mean when you say Wegman never gives anything back? Back to whom?

Back to society from which is so good to him. Now, I don't know this, I am simply saying that I have looked quite a bit and have not found anything. He very well may and keep it to himself. As far as his work it's wonderful but I look for other things from a Dog photographer that doesn't have the need to be brought up here.
As for Bev, she is the whole package for me. Perhaps because of being a Vet and doing a LOT of chairty work for both humans and animals. This is a complete circle for me when studying a Dog Photographer, which I inspire to be.
Again, it's important to point out that Mr. Wegman may in fact do these things, but I can't find them for a long time in the past. Many choose to keep these things private.
thx

Then why would you post such a malicious statement on the internet without proof.

Not meant to be malicious at all, thought I was clear when I wrote "as I can never see where he gives anything back"
"I can see" being the key words there.
Thank you.

Have you scoured the entire internet? Called his office and inquired? Done anything other than sit behind your desk and google him with an air of superiority?
Get a grip!

So how can any of us be judgemental?

I guess I opened a can of worms by asking Tom to be specific. Obviously he is a great dog lover. I appreciate that. I'm a dog lover myself.
However, I'm not so sure it's fair to disparage someone you know nothing about, just because he photographs his own dogs, which he obviously cares about very much.
Why would it be Wegman's responsibility to do anything? One could argue that the "giving back" is done in the form of making these great dogs so high profile. But he's not obligated to give anything. He's an artist, not a social activist. Come on....

Agreed, Steve. I think art IS the gift artists give to society.

Exactly so. There are few if any artists who were groomed and pampered from an early age and dropped into wealth as soon as they were of age -- like a basketball player. Most artists have to work their asses off and then still only succeed if luck comes their way. What is more beneficial to society a mediocre 2nd string point guard who makes 4 mil a year or a person who leaves us a body of work that speaks to our hearts and minds? Frankly either guy can keep all of their money, and none of us can expect or demand that they 'give back.'
I have no idea what dwdmguy expects -- For all artists who eventually make it
do a couple years of community service?

Both Hammurabi and Moses (and the God they represented) agrees with you. I think that is where the US libel/slander laws originally came from. :)

I think that's a pretty cool idea for a vet, to incorporate pet photography into the business. Like her site states, she works with handlers who know dogs. Great business idea, in my opinion. I like the pictures, too. Thanks for sharing the link.

At the risk of opening another can... since this is a forum to "Discuss the work, techniques, and lives of different photographers." I might add that I didn't particularly like many of the images... they seemed distorted to me and with really annoying backgrounds (bokeh?). It has been a while since I have owned a live Labrador Retriever, but my dogs snout wasn't that long... and was generally in focus.

I picked up the book Dogma at the pub library, which is a collection of dog photography by one of my favs, Kim Levin. Even if you're not a "lover" of dogs, there's some great photography.

"The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography (http://www.amazon.com/Dog-100-Years-Classic-Photography/dp/0811829111/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257374300&sr=8-13#noop)" is also a really sweet book with photographs by everyone from Walker Evans to Elliot Erwitt... It even includes me! (not one of the dogs, but one of the photographers) :)
PS. Love the Kim Levin site.
